I got an email today circluated to me through a lady I work with on a Breastfeeding project, the recall notice attached has also been circluated around to all the Maternal & Child Health Centres in Australia apparantly.

The Recall Notice says:

Dear Health Care Professional, 30 November 2006

Re: NESTLÉ NAN 2 HA GOLD INFANT FORMULA 900g
EXPIRY DATE 05.02.2008 & 07.02.2008

Nestlé Australia Ltd has issued a voluntary recall of the above product with the expiry date of 05.02.2008 and 07.02.2008 following the discovery of metal fragments in some cans. It is believed the contamination occurred during the production process.

If you or your clients have any of this particular product with these expiry dates, the stock can be returned to the source of purchase for a credit or a replacement. We will continue to supply the product as usual as only the above two expiry dates are affected.

No other products in the NAN or NAN HA ranges are affected. We apologise for any inconvenience this voluntary product recall may cause and can assure consumers of our continued commitment to the highest standard of quality and safety.

Yours Sincerely,

Xavier PAYRARD

I know there's no such thing as truly safe formula, but how many non-bfing mums will even find out, or notice or stop to think. There needs to be mass news coverage on this sort of thing every time there is formula "contaminated enough" for a recall. Something to let all those women who maybe havn't quite decided, or are still pregnant, still have a choice to go "hey, I'm just not going to take that chance with my baby".

I can dream.

I heard the recall on the news today. The guy said that 'no babies have been harmed by the metal fragments in the formula" I wanted to add "but many have been harmed by the formula itself"

Reason #99664076345 not to use formula......

Metal fragments in formula seems to be astonishingly common; when I was doing some research on formula recalls, I saw more of that than anything else! Goodness, even with all the "pollutants" they keep trumpeting the finding of in breastmilk, at least I don't have to worry about metal shavings!

Does Australia have donor milk banks or networks?

I think we have 2 milk banks. One in Perth & one on the Gold Coast. More are *wanted* everywhere, and seem to have been *in the works* for years, but as far as I have been able to tell. Not much action yet.

Though, more milk banks doesn't necessarily mean better access for all to donor milk, as is the case in America. Very expensive I believe.

Could you imagine how painful that would be.

Those poor cows...because surely that wouldn't be factory contamination of many infants' sole nutritional source that goes by largely unnoticed.

What a nightmare, my infant daughter is drinking this stuff.:

There will be a long distance phone call tomorrow.

If it was sent out to all the MCHNs, then all the mothers of babies will see it. Free public health - gotta love it :

Provided they actually go to the MCHN. I know of plenty of families who do not go at all through the community group that I run. And no, they don't go because they are uber-crunchy or anything, they don't go because they can't be bothered, don't want to be told what to do, or have butted heads with a MCHN and decided they don't need the hassle anymore.

And sadly, every single one of those cases that Iknow like that, formula feeds & is generally (imo) in great need of much that a MCHN has to offer, especially in regards to feeding advice.
(That said..I have actually met some lame ones in my time too that I have chosen not to go back to).
