Babywearing

Alright... I don't really get the big deal with babywearing. Is it just me? I wear her in a sling when we go out, she likes that because she likes to look around but is a little nervous about the new places that we are. But at home she prefers her laundry basket or just being laid down anywhere. She's in her laundry basket in the livingroom and kitchen (I just move it to wherever I am) and in the bedroom I lay her on the bed or in her bed to look at her mobile. In the bathroom I stick a towel in the sink and put her there while I do laundry, or if I'm taking a bath I put her in her laundry basket again. I've tried carrying her in the sling in the house, or even my snuggli, and she just doesn't like it at all. I know AP is all about the babywearing, but why exactly?

mostly because babywearing allows the baby to experience the world while being attached to mom (or dad), both physically and emotionally. they are allowed to see the new sometimes scary and sometimes exciting world from an adult perspective while being able to feel secure in themselves because they are in constant physical contact with another person.
that said, much like you i babywear 100% of the time when out of the house, but probably only half of the time while at home. DS is comfortable here and usually is happy to be put down and hang with his sisters if i need my hands free to do something. but if he's not i strap him on.

For me it's less philosophical and more about keeping baby content in the most comfortable way for me. Ds1 was a high needs baby who would NOT tolerate being put down for more than 5 minutes before the screaming bloody murder started. Even if I was standing right near by where he could see me and I was talking to him. : Sooo slinging/wrapping him helped me get a little more stuff done, like feed myself adequately! Ds2 is a much more mellow little guy who is content hanging out under his infant gym and nearby me in the bedrooms, but with a toddler to care for also I don't want ds2 to be off by his lonesome in the living room when I'm chasing ds1 around. So I like wearing him part of the day so he's included in the daily household life.

If your babe is happy doing what you're doing, that's great! No need to force something she doesn't like just to make the "AP checklist."

I don't wear dd at all really at home unless we are going into melt down phase when shes overtired. She is generally happy with some interaction while being held and then some floor time etc. I personally can't handle that much babywearing so home she is fine out of it.

K, sounds good! Sometimes I wish she'd be happy to be worn, like when I'm going from room to room. I always move her with me, but sometimes moving her every 2 minutes just to change the wash or take something out of the oven is a pain! But I don't want to leave her by her lonesome either :

I wear mostly when we are out and about. At home I just carry her around in my arms.

Unless like someone said futher up, she is overtired or having a bad day with reflux then I will. As long as she's happy.

Cara, if it makes you feel any better, AP is not a set of rules, but the way you treat your children and meet their needs. I'd say if your sweet dd is happy how things are, then you ARE meeting her needs. You're doing a great job.

Aww, thanks. I'm not real concerned about following AP to the T, just more interested in the reasoning behind some stuff

I got my ERGO this weekend! LOVE it! I didn't get the infant insert, but rather just wrap her in a thick blanket and stick her in there how they show the infants, and it works really well. Wore her for 2+ hours while we were outside in about 25 degree weather, she fit under my jacket and we both stayed toasty warm and comfy Though when I took it off I felt like I had just given birth... so not bulky and light pic

The little one and I loooooooove our Moby wrap -- so much so that she falls asleep within 2 minutes of going in, EVERY time, and stays asleep until I take her out. So no, I don't wear her much unless she's sleepy and I need to enforce a good-length nap. (If I let her sleep all day, I suspect she wouldn't sleep as well as she does all night, and man, I need all the nighttime sleep I can get!) I am looking forward to when she gets more neck control and can face out -- probably just a few more weeks -- I think that'll keep her awake, and then I'll have more options!

Could someone put up a link to an ERGO???? I've heard so much about them!!

I think I'm going to get that Ergo so DH will be more inclined to wear her. He thinks the pouchs and mai thais are too "crunchy".

I think the ERGO is pretty much a non-crunchy mai thai

Gabby only takes 20-30 min naps on her own, but when I "wear her" in my homemade sling, she can sleep for an hour straight!

I also use the sling for "outings" more than at home. At home, she is on my lap or in my arms at my breast...LOL
