cool doc story

I don't post on here much, but wanted to share a story. We went to a new doc and he was quite impressed we left our son intact. He was going on and on about how it isn't necessary and we did the right thing. He was cool! I found out from my friend the doc is intact and actually told her. He didn't tell me that, but I could guess that was the case. Nice doc, I'm glad we found him.

Cool! I hope he spreads that message to his patients' families.

We have a great doc as well - though we dont see him often. We started with a female (her partner just seemed to have a better bedside manner) when baby O was born, she asked if we were going to circ him - upon hearing no, she said - "Great. One less helpless boy I have to torture today."

Made me smile that she agreed with me - but made me sad that even though she believed such, she still did them.

Hear, hear. I mean, what is up with doctors that they can't just say NO! I will not torture your baby! :

I once asked a doc about it...and the response was essentially, if I don't do it another doc will do it anyhow (aka...why not keep the $$$ for myself). :

Nobody would actually think to EDUCATE their patients, would they : ?

I know what you mean. I just wouldn't do it. It makes me so mad that is legal to mutilate someone without their permission.

That's what my thinking has been until I really thought about it. Our pedi tells parents not to circ and that it isn't nessicary. But I believe he still does them, not for the money BUT if he doesn't another doctor will. AND maybe his way of thinking is that hopefully he can cause the least amount of pain for these little guys and give them a "better" circ. I know that doesn't make sense and those two words should never be used in the same sentence. I'm just trying to understand why the docs would still do it. It just seems our doc doesn't do things just for $$$ sake. I could be wrong and infact I plan on asking him why he still does circs. : Just trying to show a different viewpoint. I know if I was a doc I could NEVER EVER do one.

If we have a good relationship with an intact-friendly doctor, maybe we could talk them out of doing circumcisions completely. Perhaps all they need is a gentle nudge in the right direction.
The intactivist movement needs more physicians who are willing to take a stand about this issue, medical allies, so to speak.

Our pedi even refused to learn HOW to do them because he didn't want to be tempted by the amount of money he could make... and he totally believes that they are unnecessary. I find it extremely sad that so many doctors don't like circumcision and feel they're unnecessary, but do them anyway.

Where in CT...might be in the market for a new Ped..we don't have one right now.

Any idea how he feels about vaxing?

Ped vs OB

The OB is usually the surgeon.

It is my understanding that rarely does the ped do this surgery, as Peds are not surgeons.

Maybe your area is different.

Which state do you live in?

Around here the pedis do them. I'm in Oklahoma.

I believe it's the pedis who do them here in Nebraska as well... Not positive though.

This will be an interesting topic at the next drs appt.! I plan on asking him why he does still perform them or if he does I guess.

Perhaps the doctor refusing to them is what might push some parents into not going through with it. If the parents realise that the doctor refuses to them, that might send a signal that the practice is really so harmful that it should not be done. It makes the doctors view on the matter much more clear and assertive.

if enough doctors refused to do them, the parents wouldnt be able to find a doctor to do it and would have to leave their little boy intact as he should be :-)

good point... if a "doctor" isn't willing to do it then why should they? is a question they might ask themselves and hopefully ask more questions and do more research.
