diflucan?

what kind of luck have you had with diflucan? we've been battling thrush for a month (after a lac consultant flippantly told me it was JUST a latch problem - at which point i stopped the thrush treatment ... we did have a latch issue which has been resolved but definitely have thrush which became stronger from almost getting kicked and then revived ) anyway, my dr gave a script for diflucan only on my request as probiotics, GSE, nystantin, and diligence in cleanliness have not had the desired effect. the script is only for ds though and only for a week, and i thought id seen a post from a mama saying it took a month of diflucan for her AND her dc!!:
anyone? anyone?

eta: yes, we use pacifiers i have three that get boiled every day and switched out everytime his mouth gets cleaned out or "medicine" is given. anyone have ideas on how to break the pacifier habit?

This may seem weird, but I would put probiotic yogourt (If you make your own yogourt it's even better) on your nipple for a while several times a day. Also load up on yogourt and continue taking your probiotics.

Another weird suggestion would be to fill a bucket of warm water and put a few drops of teatree oil (it's antifungal) and soak the boobs. I know, sounds weird but worth a shot.

Gentian Violet is commonly used buy I've heard negative things on the bfing boards. I have never used it.

Anyways, if you do go ahead and use Diflucan, continue taking the probiotics.

Jen,

The protocol for systemic thrush in the breast is usually a loading dose of 400 mg and 100 mg for AT LEAST TWO WEEKS...sometimes to 4 weeks. You BOTH need to be treated. Nystatin is worthless....

Sorry to hear it is not improving.

Does your LC know that you indeed found thrush in DS mouth...she might actually give you more Diflucan?

Good Luck....

We have had to use diflucan -- after trying all of the natural remedies. It worked wonderfully.

The down side is that it is very hard on your liver. My ND recommended using milk thistle for about a week before starting it -- and then for a week or so after ending it (but not during). Eating beets is also good for your liver. Our doc says that he always treats mom and baby -- and I have found research to support this.

DD was 2 when we were dealing with this -- not sure how safe Milk thistle is for younger kids. You could always take some yourself and some should be in the milk.
Good luck and feel free to PM me if you want more specs.

I've never heard of diiflucan being given to the child-only the adult. I used it after 3 mos of battling thrush and we determined it was ductal. I had to use it for 2wks also I think-not only 2-3 days as the dr tried to do first. I got info from Dr Jack Newmans site that helped alot and got the dr to prescribe the longer dose.
I have used gentian violet with great results with subsequent children though!
good luck

thanks all, i've gone 3rounds of gentian violet to no avail so i think that no more should probably be used. i figured we both needed the diflucan, not one or the other, i have been loading on the gse and garlic and keeping super clean and air drying or just kinda hangin out!! ill call my lc asap - guess not til mon - and see if i can get more for me and ds, the script the dr wrote says to take for a week then discard what's left with no refills ....
keep coming with the replies, very helpful so far :

eta - i've been using gse topically and internally, also some vinegar topically, maybe should add the tea tree oil --- will get some more plain yoghurt too ... my poor nips!

We ahd thrush for a good 4 months. It was aweful. I did take a couple rounds of diflucan, but they don't want to over do that because it effects the liver. It was not given to my baby though. I believe that what cured our thrush was the probiotics (if it was refridgerated it's no good), GSE, GV, and diligent cleaning. Wash all your and DCs clothes, towels, etc. with vinegar. I think the diflucan might have helped me a little, but I think it was the other stuff that really killed it. The thrush that we are all getting is a resistant type. It will take time to kill. You should also modif your diet to eliminate the stuff that feeds thrush (sugar).

I too have never heard of Diflucan being given to baby. I took it for 2 weeks due to very resistant thrush and it went away for a while but is now back again. We've been battling this on and off for 3 months. I have no suggestions for getting rid of the paci as ds also takes one and I'm sure that is part of our problem. Some things I did to help:

vinegar rinses after each feeding & squirted some of the solution on his diaper area

Gentian Violet

Acidophilus tablets for me & I opened the capsules and let ds suck some of the powder off my finger. I also mixed acidophilus with plain yogurt for his yeasty diaper rash and that helped alot...

hot vinegar wash for all clothing, nursing bras, etc.

Try to stay away from nursing pads if you can, they keep your breasts too moist.

All of those things would take the yeast away for a while but then it shows up again. It's very frustrating. I now have it intra-ductally for the second time.

If you find something that works let me know as well! Good luck!

This is a good reference from Dr. Newman:

http://www.bflrc.com/newman/handouts...luconazole.htm

I have heard of diflucan for treatment in babies over 6m. It would make sense to me that you sould be treated as well though.

Yeast is so hard to beat!!!! I was on Diflucan for a month while dd was on Nystatin. I hope that you are able to kick it soon!

I'm a hospital pharmacist, and we do use IV Diflucan in our preemies, but only for life-threatening systemic fungal infections, usually once every 48 hours, and the babies do quite well. However, I've never seen us give it by mouth to our babies. Maybe if I worked in a retail setting I might have seen that. I wish you great success with whateverf you do!

We used it when Nystatin and GSE failed when DD was ~12 months. I took the pill version for 2 weeks and DD the liquid version for two weeks. We also used an antifungal cream (not nystatin) on DDs bum, because she also developed a fungal rash in her diaper area. It worked for us. I took the diflucan 12 hours after/before DD right after the last nursing of the day (she would sleep and not nurse ~4/5 hours after that), so she would get minimal additional medicine via breastmilk.
Also somehow DD didn't like to eat yoghurt while on the diflucan, very weird. When the 2 weeks were over she wanted yoghurt again.
