I made a bunch... my thumbs hurt..

does anyone else still do this? there really pretty ugly when they are done lol but they smell sooooo yummy.

For those that have no idea what I am talking about a pomander is an orange that has whole cloves stuck inside of them to make them look like ugly brown spikey balls lol

but they smell yummy and last forever When I am done with mine I soak them in orange and lemon oil to make the scent stronger.

Its the one tradition I held on to.. my grandma use to make them.

I saw that Katie Brown (I can't even remember what station she's on, this was so long ago) do some that were beautiful. She did all kinds of citrus, actually. In addition to spiking them with cloves, she used pumpkin carving tools to carve designs in the peel, leaving the white behind (if that makes sense). They were sooo pretty. Even tho the smell from the carved ones doesn't last that long, they really pretty up the clove spikey ones.

And no, I don't, but is this a good project to do with a ten year old? I have one on my hands (not mine) who is desperate to help with some holiday chore but no one wants him helping with food (can't quite get the whole idea of not, say, sneezing all over the food). This might work, and it's something he could take home to his mom.

I haven't made them in years but I'm going to make some with ds on Sunday. They do smell yummy. I should have started them earlier because I like to wrap them to 'cure' them for a few weeks.

I love those things. I remember doing them with my mother as a kid. They're great because they're so simple to do!

Great idea!

I'm going to do it tomorrow! I forgot all about them. Haven't thought of it in years.

Yes it is!! My 9 year old made 4 tonight and wants to keep them all lol It was very easy just use a tooth pick to poke holes in it so the cloves slide right in

we do oranges, lemons and apples... not too many apples though because they don't last as long

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

This sounds so perfect for us to do tomorrow.

Now if I can just find directions for making Christmas trees out of magazines, we'll be set (I swear I can remember doing something like this at school. Although spray paint may have been involved...)!

I never did these at home with family - we had 5 dogs, and not all the dogs were perfectly trained. Pomanders can sometimes be mistaken for tennis balls ....

However, now that I'm on my own with only one impeccably trained dog ... I'm going to be making some. My only question is - what do you do with them, after you make them? Put them in a bowl?

They are on my list to make with my 4 year old DD. My ony struggle so far has been where to find whole cloves....

Whole cloves should be easy to find in the bulk section odf a groacery store or at health food store. I used to make them all the time and had completely forgotten about it. I must make some with my new daughter! I use a skewer to make holes first as it saves the findger tips and I hand them up with ribbon and decorate them with dried rosebuds at the top.

I just ordered a pound of bulk cloves online the other day to make these as gifts! I can't wait til they get here!

My 5 year old dd loves making these. We use a toothpick too, to make the cloves easier to push in.

I'd recommend using smaller citrus (like a clemantine or small lemon) for little kids. Bigger fruit takes too long to cover in cloves.

For the sore thumbs, when I googled I found a tip - wrap masking tape around your thumb.

I love that you all love pomanders... I thought I was the only one!!

Ok you don't even have to cover the whole pamander.. you can make decorations in the fruit...

I made an argile one lol oh and leave a little space too because your orange will shrink to like half its size over time... this saves cloves.

I wrap the whole pomander in a thick see through ribbon and hang them all over... I also put them in baskets

I will take a picture of one in a second... My son just pushes in his cloves until he has 4 good lines going... thats all you need for good smells then we let the pomanders sit in lemon oil and orange oil...

I will take a picture of one in a minute.

I use unrippened fruit and the more cloves you stick in I think the longer it lasts ... we had one last forever!!! I through it out because I was sick of looking at it lol
