I think ds has a UTI

My ds who is 19 mos old is screaming and holding himself when he urinates. I fear he may have a UTI. I am worried about them wanting to catheterize him for a urine sample. I know this must be painful for him. I am supposed to take him to the peds office first thing in the am. I am a little scared of all the things they will do to him. Do any of you have any advice for me?

I am really nervous about this. My ds seems to be in pain when he urinates. Now, I notice that he is barely urinating at all!!! His diaper was dry this morning. It is usually SOAKING wet. I don't know whats wrong and what they are going to do to him because he is intact. I am scared we are going to have a traumatic day at the doctor. I was hoping someone could give me a little insight on what to expect or what to do to help his situation or what might be wrong. We are leaving in 30 mins to go. They want to see him asap.

I don't have much advice but wanted to post. My intact son had a UTI with symptoms similar to your son's. He was required to give a urine sample but not catheterized. I think that the main issue is that without catherterization they are not 100% sure which bacteria is present in the urinary tract; we just treated for the most likely candidate to avoid trauma of a catheter.

Good luck!

I'm sorry you didn't get any replies before you went...

I don't have any advice and obviously you have already left, but please let us know how it went. Healing vibes going out to your ds!!

Oh gosh, sorry nobody got back to you before you left. Please do update when you can.

Thank you for your replies and concerns. It was quite a long day. Ds ended up urinating pretty good right after I posted this morning. When we went to the dr, she was very nice and understanding. She said he retracted enough to get a urine sample without a catheter. She put a bag on him and then he and I went to breakfast so I could give him plenty of fluids so he would urinate. He finally did but just a little. When we returned to the dr. office, there was a different dr to see him because the first one was just there for back up. However, this dr, was not so intact friendly. First, he said he was concerned because ds was "uncircumcised" and that he found ds's white blood cell count to be up which indicates an infection. However, he did not give any antibiotics because he wants to do further test on the sample. The dr feels like the sample might be inaccurate because of the foreskin (which was cleaned well before the bag was attached). Anyway, I basically left without any answers and feeling irritated due to the attitude I got for leaving my son intact. The first doctor didn't seem to have a problem with it (intact) at all though. Oh well, I am supposed to be getting a call in the am to find out more information. Meanwhile, I will be giving ds cranberry juice as much as he will drink.

Another good juice is blueberry and pomegranate if you have a Trader Joe's near you they have a pomegranate blueberry juice that has no added sugar (as that can feed an infection).
I feel for your poor baby. I get UTI's they suck!
I saw your post and wanted to say that they could bag him (which they did!).
I would see if you could see dr #1 again. I am thinking dr#2 will want to cath him to get a "cleaner" sample, which I say NO! If they cleaned him good before they got the sample he should be OK. Especially if they got enough to see he has an increased white count.
Push fluids on him, that will help clean out the bladder.

Hugs mama!

Fluids and TONS AND TONS of Emergen-C Asorbic (sp?) acid stuff...

The more vitamin C the better.

to the point of loose stools...

I've cured my own UTI's without antibiotics using Vitamin C and sugar free cranberry juice (Of course at the time I didn't know about Emergen-C stuff or that other stuff they reccomend on the vax forum, I just used the chewables, now I swear by Emergen-C)

Sorry you got such an incompetent doctor the second time. : If you get him again, ask him if he'd blame a little girl's labia for her UTI.....
It is so sad when a bunch of laypeople on a message board know more about how to treat intact boys than a doctor does!!!!! :
Don't worry, I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at the doctor.

I'm sorry you are going throught this! Please let us know what the testing finds...If you have to go back simply state "I would prefer an intact friendly doctor" - you are trying to help your son - you don't need to be scolded for your humane parenting choices while there. My son had a UTI at 2 1/2 and the doctors flipped about how rare it was etc...they wanted to do ultrasound tests, kidney evaluations..anyway - I calmly told them if it kept recurring, I would think about further testing. My son had blood coming out when he peed and I took the round of antibiotics. It never recurred. I since read though that the increased risk of UTIs for uncirc'd boys only applies to the first 6 months of life. Anyway - it might simply be developmental. if your son recently had a growth spurt, the uretha might be slightly behind the bladder which can cause a small amount of backflow..most likely, it will even itself out in the next few months and everything will be okay. Let us know!! HOpe your DS is feeling better!

I have been pushing fluids on him all day. Now he is shoving them away from me. Anyway, he has had several soaking wet diapers today and not been crying when he urinates. I did not know about EMERGEN-C. Where can I find it? I will get some tomorrow morning. The cranberry juice I bought has extra vitamin c in it. I wasn't sure if that was a plus or not but I got it anyway.

The first doctor was thinking he probably had an inflamed aretha (I don't know how to spell it) and that he would be fine. She seemed so much more positive and friendly towards us. It was funny because she was looking at him and I said "I hope you don't plan on trying to forcebly retract him" and before I could even finish she said "goodness NO that would be so awful for him and cause damage" So at least I know some of the doctors know what they are doing. My ds's regular ped was not in today but he also is intact friendly.

I was quite irritated when I left because of the attitude he gave me. I think he is from the old school of thought about circumcision. I guess one thing that really irritated me was how he refered to my son as "uncircumcised". I almost asked him how he could be "un"circumcised if he never was circumcised to begin with. But I guess that was just the smarta$$ in me wanting to come out.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and replies. I really do appreciate it a great deal. It really helps to communicate with others who understand.

You can get EMERGEN-C at your local health food store or food co-op. These days, it might also be carried in larger supermarkets with a "health food" section. It would be in the vitamin section. It comes in little packets.
Well, it sounds like your doctor situation isn't as bad as I thought it was. I'm glad of that.

Thanks Yes, for the most part the drs in that office are pretty intact friendly. There are just a couple who are not and we only have to see them when they are on call and we have an issue - like this weekend. Ds seems to be perfectly normal now. No crying and he is having his usual wet diapers :

FWIW - People like to make a big deal about uti's and circumcision. Well, my circ'd brother in law has had them. So, eventhough I know all of you know this already, it doesn't only happen in intact little boys as people like to portray. Sigh. I just hate having to constantlly defend my family's choice to leave our son whole. I think it is ridiculous.

Yes, it is ridiculous. Who's giving you trouble? Your family? Friends? Hang in there, mama!

I suspect they're giving you trouble because you're showing them a better way, and that's threatening to them.
