Spinoff the GTT thread

So, I caved and took the darn test.

I thought something was wrong with this... and now I know! UGH!

I thought I remembered the test last time as only drinking a 50g solution. Well, I didn't think about it clearly-- the woman gave me a 100g solution! : No wonder I STILL felt sick 6 hours AFTER the test! That was like me eating 10 candy bars all at once! : Worst part is that test came back all skewed!!!!!! My level after one hour was 153. Of course, I said to the medical assistant that, "my that's pretty good considering I never eat that much darn sugar!" She replies, "Its still high and we are going to have to check into this whole solution thing. The LAB may have changed how they give the test" UM- WHAT?! : I thought the DOCTOR made that decision, not the dang LAB!

OMG- I am just really irritated over the whole darn thing!

Well, the medical assistant calls yesterday. The LAB tells her (not the doctor, mind you) that it wouldn't have mattered if I drank the 50g solution OR the 100g solution, that 153 result would have been the same. WTF?! So, you are telling me that it doesn't matter if I drink twice as much sugar, my results would be identical. WHat a LOAD OF CRAP-O-LA! SHe was pressuring me to schedule a retest. I declined and said I would talk to the Dr about it at my appt on the 7th. I did not mention this, but I planned to go armed with my BGL results, testing 4 times a day so the Dr. could leave me alone about it. I refuse to drink that crap again. It is not good for me (who is sensitive to sugar) nor this little baby.

So, today I bought a glucometer. (talk about pricey : ) I had breakfast at 6:45ish. By 11:30, I was pretty hungry. But, before I ate, I tested my BG. I had an 83. TOTALLY NORMAL for 4+ hours after eating. I had lunch, waited an hour and tested again. My reading: 106! PERFECT READING! Go figure.

Also, last time, they just tested my blood with a finger prick and a glucometer. This time, they drew a tube of blood? Is this standard now? My last GTT was just 2 years ago with the pregnancy of my son. When I did the test last time, my BGL was 113 after 1 hour. Now a full tube of blood and wait 2 days for the result. Something is screwy to me :

Ok, thanks for letting me get all this out.... and thanks for listening!
Cindy

PS,
When should I test?? Before and after each meal and my fasting sugar in the morning?

Thanks!!!

Well, I have tested several times. My fasting sugar this morning was 84. Pretty good I think. Every time I tested before I ate, my sugars were in the 80's. After a meal, I tested at the one hour interval.... not two. My highest sugar at those points was around 110.... except this morning. I just tested and realized why I got a reading of 141. I am sitting here drinking coffee with sweet creamer. I will test again at 9:30 to see if it has gone down :P

I am not seeing a pattern of sugar issues. I think I will be OK and well armed on Thursday.

What do you ladies think?

Thanks!
Cindy

i think most pregnant women who drink 100 gms of pure sugar will have a "high" reading. though 150 isn't really high. it's 50% above a normal fasting BGL. only with pregnant women do they have these crazy standards that most of us would fail. it doens't make any sense at all.

:

i think it's an insane slippery slope that only leads to rampant misdiagnosis and eventually unneeded interventions.

Yeah, I bought a glucometer too. It was only $20.00, but the strips! Aye yiyi.: My insurance is covering them though cuz I pressured my doc for a script.

My midwife (whom I'm still totally seeing) says the numbers they're looking for are 95 or less at the fast (first thing in morning blood), 140 after the 1 hr and 120 affter 2 hr. Anything there or less should give no flags to the docs.

I am glad I took my GTT test in my own hands. I found out I'm hypoglycemic and need to eat all the time. I knew that and was doing that, but having the test results (66-75 fast/104-120 1 hr) helps keep me motivated to not let my food intake get too low.

BTW, that's just BULL that twice the sugar would give you the same results. And if I went two hours without eating, I would get so sick and so would my babies. I'm just grateful glucose tests are so easy to do.

I "failed" the one hour GTT with a score of 140 -- one point above the cut-off. I wasn't enthusiastic about taking the 3hr, so my OB prescribed a glucometer. I've been testing in the morning, and before and after each meal. I really enjoy using it, and seeing the results. Like you, Jude Rose, I actually spend a lot of the day hypoglycemic, unless I am snacking every couple of hours. My only elevated reading was after I had a half a bagel for breakfast. My fasting BGL that morning was 100, and an hour after eating the bagel slice it was at 183. :

And guess what? Well... the day I took the GTT, I had a bagel two and a half hours before I drank the solution. I'm pretty sure that's what gave me my elevated results. I wish I had eaten some eggs or something that day instead!

It makes no sense at all that drinking 100gr of sugar would give you the exact same result as drinking 50gr. That's pretty unbelievable.
