Am feeling a lot better...only 3 more days of Diflucan to go (out of 30). I am still using the GSE and plan to until one week from today at least.

I have a question...ever since I've been diagnosed with thrush, I have felt an itchy sensation in my armpits when I nurse. It's kind of like when you get a sore lymph node in your armpit with af. I have been thinking that this itchiness is from the yeast being in my ducts. But now, I have gotten so used to it, I am beginning to think that it is normal. Does anyone else have this sensation while nursing?

The itchiness is yeast. I'd get a refill on the rx if you can and cut out sugar and refined carbs.

Just wanted to chime in on the Monistat. I used it on my nipples as part of my daily "beat the yeast" routine. I bought the kind for vaginal infections and just made sure to wipe off any visible cream before nursing. It was helpful in my case.

Over the weekend dd & I started on probiotics, I bought the Motherlove nipple cream and ordered the Motherlove diaper rash/thrush relief. I've gone through a ton of dipes, done a ton of laundry....
I am going to get some gv but dd's 1st bday is Wenesday and I don't want her to have a purple mouth for pictures...even though nursing on the left side is HORRIFIC PAIN....:
I guess I'm gonna call the docs office and see if I can get a script for Diflucan...
I feel awful for gritting my teeth and quietly moaning when dd nurses on the left....it just hurts so bad....

Oh, goody... I am not alone. I just found this thread... or I would have posted earlier. We have been battling thrush for 6 weeks +, done 4 bottles of nystatin, 2 tratments of gentian violet and I have taken the difulcan, but only once! I didnt get it on my nips until ds had it for 5 weeks already. ARGH! Its so frustrating. Tell me this: Whats the harm in NOT treating it and just letting it go? Are there any long term side effects? I took away ds's binkie 2 days ago... hes not getting it back. I am debating NOT treating it with anything for a week or two and see what happens. Poor kid will probably be covered in white patches!

Ahhhh...Its so nice to hear I'm not the only one dealing with this. We have been battling it for over 5 months. I am taking notes! Thanks for the tips.

Seriously...what do you do about the pain while nursing??? I don't want to even think about weaning yet...but I cannot do this pain for another year...I can only nip on one side so that people don't think i'm having some sort of attack.....

I took ibuprofen when my pain was its worst. The anti-inflammatory properties of it really helped.

DD and I have had thrush for nearly two months. In the beginning it was really bad, but one treatment of nystatin knocked it back, but it didn't go away completely. I basically have had lingering thrush and she has a lingering patch in her mouth. All I have been doing now is using Pharmex Neonate probiotics in her mouth twice a day, taking acidophilus myself, and when my nips seem dry I use olive oil on them or clotramizole cream. It's for athelete's foot! But I've heard many people say to use it... it's an antifungal. You can get a big tube at target.

Anyway, it seems to be gone on me, and there is only a tiny patch in her mouth. Hugs to all, it sucks!!!!!

I just got off the phone with my ped and she wants to try diflucan for ds... he is only 5 months old... has anyone had their dc treated with diflucan? I thought that wasnt to be used to the babes.... I'm not sure I want to let her do it or not. The thrush doesnt bother him THAT bad. COuldnt we jsut live with it until it went away?

my dr prescribed diflucan to my ds only ... now im taking it. i dont think our family dr is used to dealing with such things, therefore didnt know exactly how to go about it, i actually had to ask him specifically for diflucan or he would have said to keep trying the nystantin that was doing absolutely nothing :
anyway, good luck to ya....
wanting to catch up with everyone else but trying to get ready for work and such, so will be posting again soom

600 mg Advil and 5 mg of Vicodin every six hours. I also always made sure to have something mindless to distract me (I watched Sex and the City on DVD) and told my DH and anyone else around not to talk to or distract me while I was getting her latched on. When it was really bad, DH would give me a foot massage while she nursed. That actually helped a lot.

I've been able to be off the Vicodin for about two weeks, and am now only taking the Advil twice a day.

I did go ahead and use the Monistat. It didn't do anything to help.

I went in for my six week PP check-up. My doctor prescribed 14 days of Diflucan and a nipple cream with many different ingedients. Baby has been on Nystatin for a week, and her tongue is still white. I am feeling much better after starting the Diflucan, but I'm worried that the Nystatin isn't working on DD's mouth, and I'm just going to get thrush again when I'm off the Diflucan. I'm also worried that DD is going to get pain in her mouth or get a yeast diaper rash.

hi there - welcoming myself to the world of battling yeast - i have been diagnosed with "yeast mastitis" which i am pretty sure i have been battling for a while, but couldnt get anyone to listen to me - anyway as i put pieces together i am seeing that i may have had symptoms i did not even recognize...what does it feel like when you have yeast under your nails??? does it feel hot???
Well, I thought I was getting better....
Then I started having "yeast" issues in my vaginal area too. Went to the nurse-midwife, she said that after 30 days of Diflucan, that there was no possible way for it to be yeast and that I was just being a little over zealous at fighting the yeast and made myself sore. She did a wet-mount and said that there was no yeast or bacteria. She advised me to put Neosporin on my yoni--don't ever do this!!! OMG, I was so sore a couple of days later. I think it killed off any good bacteria I had (there went $20 worth of probiotics) and then I had a raging yeast infection. I think it was yeast because the only thing that made me feel better was the little tube of vulvar cream that came some Monistat. So anyway, made another appt but insisted on seeing the dr this time. He had some interesting questions...he's wondering if it is yeast at all. His theory is that after all this diflucan and other preventative measures and its still coming back, that maybe its not yeast. So he did a "culture" of some sort that will take 7 to 10 days to get results back, and I guess we will see what comes of it. He also did an exam of my breasts, which of course look perfectly normal now that I have been fighting off the recurrent thrush for 2 months.

Any thoughts, theories, or guesses on this one? Thanks

Momtosimon,
Mimie's post on 12/13/06 kind of answers your question. I think if you don't treat it the yeast winds up in the baby's system, specifically the digestive tract --which can cause uncomfortable gassiness-- and then on the "other end" resulting in a very bad rash, which must be very painful.

On the other hand if your DD doesn't seem too uncomfortable you might just be able to ride it out.
