I have an easy Grandparent Gift idea for you!

We just started making these last night (I have to get 50 done by the week before Christmas!)

Photo "frame" magnets

First, I got mini-wallet prints made of each of my kids' portraits. I got mine at Wal-Mart, but any place where you can get digital prints done will work.

Next I made templates for the "frame" (the rectangle of paper you glue the photo to) and for the background, so the kids would have something to trace around to cut out their papers.

Then I cut rectangles of Foam-core board the same size as the background template for the backing card. Corrugated cardboard or matboard would work, too.

Once all the cutting was done, I put together the workbox:

Photos in baggies - 1 baggie per child
Backing cards
templates
a "stack" of scrapbooking paper in different colors & patterns
round refrigerator magnet blanks
small stickers
glue sticks
pencils
fine-point markers
scissors
glitter glue
jewels
jewel glue (this is WONDERFUL for glueing on the magnets!)

Having all the materials together in a box makes it easier to pick up the project when the time presents, and makes cleanup FAST.

To put together the magnet, follow these steps:
1. On the backside of a piece of scrapbook paper, trace around the frame template.
2. On a different piece, do the same for the background template. Cut both out.
3. Using the glue stick, put glue on the back of the photo. Center it over the frame piece and glue down.
4. Do the same to the back of the frame piece, gluing it to the background piece.
5. Glue-stick the surface of a backing card, and stick the completed background to it.
6. Decorate with the child's name, and whatever embellishments the kids want. (For my toddler, I do all of the glueing and writing, and he does the decorating with stickers and jewels)
7. Once all decorations are dry, use the jewel glue to glue a magnet to the back of the backing card. Once that's dry, you're done!

I figure this is an excellent Grandparent gift because:
it's made by the kids
it's an easy, space-saving way for them to display the kids' pictures
it's easy to make them in large quantities
they can be sent in the mail
They use up scraps and bits of art materials from around the house

Thanks, ladies!

I have to get to work on my 14yo's magnets tonight - he hasn't shown any interest in doing them himself. Go figure
