Thrush experiences?

So Ingrid has thrush, though mild. Our mw suggested rubbing a water/baking soda solution on her tongue. Anyone else have success with this?
It does seem to have diminished.

I do think I may have it as well, and I've been taking acidopholus orally. Anything else that has worked for any of you guys?

Grapefruit seed extract worked awesome for us. I drank a solution of it several times a day and also swabbed dd's mouth out with the same solution several times a day. I just used a q-tip dipped in the mixture to swab her mouth, and then I drank the rest. I think I diluted it to 10 or 15 drops of GSE in about a cup of water. You can also add 15 drops or so to your laundry to help make sure it's all out. Oh, and I was instructed to wash all clothing on hot till it cleared.

I had bad experience with my ds 10 years ago. His mouth had white spots for a FEW MONTHS! I even used nistatin (ped prescribed) with a good result when I used it. However as soon as I would stop the meds, white spots would come back. Sorry, my post is depressing, but the good news that after a few months it just went away and we never had problems ever since.

I have used nystatin in the past and have also used genetian violet. The genetian viloet works so much faster than the prescription nystatin.

We did gentian violet and I boiled my bras every day.

My LC wasn't high on nystatin. She said the gv would work better. She also told me to get a prescription for Diflucan from my midwife, because I had a raging case of thrush myself and it was like being stabbed with knives every time I nursed the baby.

I'll be another one to say gentian violet will work wonders! It's messy & stains, though, so keep that in mind. Also, GSE is verrrry nasty tasting. I can't imagine putting that in a baby's mouth or my own even. I've heard of women putting it in a spray bottle, diluted in water, & spritzing their breasts after each feeding. Also, you need to cut out all sugar from your diet. Yeast thrives on it.

Good luck!

It is disgustingly bitter tasting, but it's what worked for us. I was so desperate when we finally tried it that I didn't care. We had already tried acidophilous, gentain violet 3 times, and Diflucan. Nothing knocked it out until I did the GSE. I'm sold on the stuff for yeast infections. We had battled thrush for the first 3-4 mo of dd's life when the GSE finally worked.

Then, about a year later I noticed the same familiar sharp bee sting pain in my breast and a day later a tiny white spot in dd's mouth. I immediately started with the GSE, and it cleared up right away and never came back.

Also, as far as the bad taste, it actually didn't bother my dd at all when she was tiny. However, when she got it a year or so later she would make a funny face after I swabbed her mouth, but she never fought me on it and actually seemed to like it. It's not that it tastes really, it just leaves a bitter taste after you swallow it. It should never be taken without diluting though.

I've used gentian violet with both of my big kids with great results.

GSE is nasty tasting, and I cannot picture an infant apprciating the taste of baking soda either - it's NOT pleasant.

another vote for gentian violet. If you put a little nonpetroleum jelly on the lips and around the mouth area before swabbing it out you will have less staining.

GSE, you should get some in pill form to treat yourself orally. You can also make a wash for your nipples with the liquid form or white vinegar.
