How do I fix this? She sucks in her top lip (and someitmes botom one too) with her tounge and therefore her latch sucks. She clisks constantly while nursing. It is not really painful but she swallows so much air that she spits up and it so gassy. Help!!!

What you want is fish lips. At first my DD sucked like this too. I had to use my finger to roll her lip out by tugging on it a little rigth under the nose. She might pull off but you have to practise. With the bottom lip do the same. You can also try to push down on her chin a little so she opens up wider. She should cover a majority or your areola, so your nipple is i the back of her mouth. I hope that helps with the gas, in my opinion once you solve your latch problems the gas should get better.

I had to tug DS's lips out at that age too, it was a constant thing. He was tight lipped both on top and bottom, and it was kind of a constant struggle for a while. He finally got it though, and fortunately he didn't care when I was messing with his lips while nursing. I agree with the PP, once she's got a more effective latch, she won't be taking in much air, if at all!

You definitely want to fix this asap--a bad latch can mean baby isn't getting enough and can lead to low supply.
It's a good idea to have someone look at your baby's latch in person. I would meet with a LLL Leader or lactation consultant.

typing with kiddo in lap. thx for replies. i did go see an lc but she didn't catch the lip thing until after the visit - dd did not start doing it cinsistently until after we went. she wants to teach me to fingerfeed dd but i can't afford to go back. luckily i make enough milk to feed a small country - i had to take sage to decrease supply with dd#1 and i still donated like 60 bags. i am tandeming too so not worried about supply too much but perhaps i should be. lc said it should even itself out when dd is around 3mo but i wanted to spare her the gas and fussiness.

Is there an LLL Leader nearby? They give great free help.
