Wow... am I really seeing this in print?

I found this while searching the AAP website... I can't believe what I am reading!

http://pediatrics.aappublications.or...l/106/4/S1/954

Basically, the writer believes we should routinely circumcise infants bacause when they are older, it may be embarrassing or confusing to them when a care-giver cleans their penis... read the whole article (it is short).

If my son is afraid that when he's 90 some nurse will need to clean his penis, he can have himself circ'd when he's an adult.

Enough said.

WTF???

First of all, I question whether retraction is really necessary for cleaning in the gerontological population, or if ill-informed health care practitioners are making a problem where there isn't one.

Secondly, if the foreskin becomes a health problem for Grandpa when he's 80 years old, then why not circ him when he's 80 years old? Why does it "have to" be done when he's an infant?

Do countries where circ is uncommon have these issues w/ elderly intact men too, I doubt it.

What about females?

I wonder how the older FEMALE population feels when a nurse pulls back the clitoral hood to clean under there?

Maybe we should circumcise females too… just in case!!!!

Wow. Those poor men...no wonder they strike out!!

No problems in intact countries. The whole idea of it is totally ridiculous.

It's really insulting, this nurse trying to get people to circ so that HER job is easier. If it's too hard for her, she should go into a different field.

There is just too much stupidity out there for me to deal with sometimes...

Exactly

Oh, for goodness sake! Like its not embarassing to have someone wipe your butt, either. But they do it for the elderly (or anyone else who is unable), and it should not be an issue. That is what health care professionals are trained to do- help people when they cannot do things for themselves, without making an issue of it.

I don't think it was an article. I think she wrote a letter in responce to an article about the risks of circ. There is a second letter that goes more into what the article is about and a responce from the editor at the bottom.

Wow, my reaction I guess is why wouldn't an old man have the same reaction to a nurse cleaning his penis if it were circ'ed or intact? Whoever she was talking about in the article would probably whig out even if they were circ'ed.

For real....at least they are getting paid a decent wage for what they are doing. Hello? That is just part of being in the medical field!
