serger self maintenance?

i have a babylock imagine. it's past due or a cleaning. problem is, i don't have $140 to take it in right now. i opened the bottom to find my needle screw that had fallen down inside. I found the screw and vacuumed out the dust bunnies. But, i'm sure it needs some oil in there. Does anyone know where it requires oil? I just do NOT see how they can charge such outrageous prices to clean out a little lint and put some oil in.

where do i learn how to do this.. seems like it would be a great line of work to be in

i'd google serger care ot maintenance. I'm sure there are tons of places online that walk you through the process. your manual probably has a section as well. or take it to the shop and ask them to teach you how to do basic maintenance.

nak, sorry my reply is a bit choppy

There's probably a yahoo group for BAbylock serger users that might be helpful. I have a pfaff and I belong to a yahoo group for it. Also you should be able to ask Babylock for the info. I email Brother whenever I have a question about my machine and they are always very responsive.

There is a website, SewUSA I think, that specializes in selling owner's manuals but also carries service manuals. I keep thinking about buying the service manuals for my sewing machine and serger, at $10 a piece it seems like a great deal.

Google should do it, sorry I don't have the link.

Yes, it would be a great line of work! Most sewing machine repair men (yes I meant men) were trained after the 2nd world war or Korea, and are retired or retiring now. I couldn't face the electronic aspects of new machines, but I have long envisioned a home based, mobile sewing machine maintenance and minor repair company. Tools would cost less than $100, and fit in a small case. Offer in home service; many women customers would feel more comfortable having a woman come into their home than a man.

For anyone who is interested, there was a sewing machine repair school in Santa Cruz, California that offered classes and/or video tapes to teach yourself as of 5 years ago, but I can't find their link this morning.
