Splenda when TTC

I use splenda instead of sugar in my coffee and tea. I drink only 1 cup a day. Some of the foods I eat are sweetened with Splenda. I got in this habit when I was doing Weight Watchers and now it is just second nature to me. It is in moderation though and not at all excessive.

Is Splenda bad for me when I am TTC? What about once I get pregnant? I don't overdo it. Like I said 2 tsp in my coffee or tea in the morning and in some foods I eat like applesauce and WW bars.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I personally would avoid it. I don't know how it affects fertility but I know it's not healthy overall so it's probably best to just avoid it if you can. You may want to try stevia. Also, you can read articles about splenda (sucralose) on mercola.com. HTH

Thanks. I do avoid Nutrasweet and Equal but I wasn't sure about Splenda. Guess I should consider getting deprogrammed from Weight Watchers and switching back to sugar.

Yep, I would. Even the What to Expect While You're Expecting book says to avoid those types of sweeteners too. It did say that sucralose was the safest, but the jury is still out on just how safe it is.

I second the trying of stevia. I tried it the other day and found it to be quite good.

I'd avoid it.
But because it was brought up, is Stevia safe?

I use that normally but I couldn't find any research or studies on it for pregnant women. So far I've been using sugar and honey.

Stevia and Xylitol are both plant based so they are considered natural and safe. I used Xylitol when I was pg with DS and also had regular sugar.

I second avoiding using any of those artifical sweetners, and IMHO Splenda falls in to that category with all of the chlorine that is in it. I won't touch it even if I'm not pg. HTH.

I would switch to xylitol. It tastes way better than splenda and is considered natural and safe. No aftertaste either. It is by far a better fake surgar than saccharine, aspartame and splenda. Also, it measures cup for cup like sugar and splenda in baking and such. I make chocolates from xylitol and unsweetened chocolate for my pre-diabetic grandma and my diabetic grandma each year.

Incidentally, did anyone know that Donald Rumsfeld is the dude who made aspartame available for human consumption despite all the testing that shows that it can cause brain damage amongst other horrible things?

I am constantly spreading the word about the evils of aspartame, but I never feel like anyone takes me seriously. My sister uses 1-2 equal packets in each cup of tea, and she drinks tea all day long. She says she doesnt want calories, but stevia is calorie free I believe. My dad grows it so when we want some sweetened tea we just walk to the deck and get some. Or you can just eat it for fun, because what's more fun then eating a leaf off a plant.

I actually had a coworker who told us that he had done some travelling in Central America with a guide. The guide kept pulling leaves off a plant and chewing them, so my coworker did the same. He later found out that he had been chewing on coca leaves. It was kind of funny, but this coworker was a compulsive liar, so I'll never know if it was a true story.

By the way, one more vote for stevia. Its crazy sweet, so a little lasts a long time.

I wouldn't touch aspertame if it was the only food left on the planet. I don't understand the mentality of someone who thinks it's safe to put rat poison in the food.
I tried beet sugar, but didn't like the texture.
I made myself learn to enjoy the natural flavor of foods without salt or sugar. (it takes a while...)

Stevia is used in South America as a NATURAL CONTRACEPTIVE for men. You can google it for more info. I don't know it's affect on women, but I would be very wary. This is why it is labeled as a "dietary supplement" instead of sweetner, it has not been proven safe. Not that I am saying other sweetners are not more dangerous...because lord knows aspartame kills brain cells (it's an excitotoxin like MSG) but in terms of fertility we need to be very careful, natural or not. I'd just stick with unrefined sugar IMHO.

i just did a search for that and all I could find was things reputing the theory such as chem2pharm and stevia. net. Though I would agree that stevia .net would be biased, i cannot find anyone purporting that this is true using scientific method. The 2 studies that say that it has contraceptive effects have some pretty serious flaws.

I read on these boards that Splenda is safe while TTC'ing. My personal theory on all of this stuff is moderation.
