Books/resources for freelance writers?

I am working on a novel, but I'd like to do some freelancing as well (magazine articles and such). I think I'm drawn to the instant gratification (or rejection, lol) of it all, unlike my novel, which is slow-going.

Does anyone have recommendations on a good all around how-to book or website? Thanks!

I've not read it, but I bet the Writer's Market is a good resource. I'd at least start there and at www.mediabistro.com. Good luck!

I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd throw in a few things. If you want advice, I'd recommend Jenna Glatzer's Make a REAL Living as a Freelance Writer. If you want a great blog with job postings, try Deb Ng's Freelance Writing Job - www.writersrow.com/deborahng.

Just so you know, magazine writing isn't instant gratification. Web writing for content sites or ezines comes pretty close, but many people can wait months and months to see magazine articles come to fruition, and the pay often takes even longer.

Writer Mama by Christina Katz has great resources for freelancers.

BrandiRhodes is right, though. If you're looking for immediate gratification, web content all the way.

The Renegade Writers, hands down. Changed my life. Dead serious.

As for instant gratification....hmm. I often have queries that take SIX MONTHS before I finally get the assignment, then four or so more before it makes it to print.
