I just spoke with my insurance company and was flatly informed they do not cover homebirths, unless it's an emergency. : :


I'm so upset :

That truly bites! However, they will cover all your prenatal appts. right? Is there any way to just have your doctor/midwife bill the ins. co. for the appointments and then you pay just for the birth part?

Sorry, insurance companies do suck! I hope you are able to figure something out.

FWIW, here's my plan: We had hoped to be in Costa Rica for our baby to be born (and be a citizen here), but I lost that pg. My plan for now is, since our COBRA ins. will run out at the end of July, I'm going to have ins. pay for all the pre-natal work up, and then fly down here for the last month and give birth here. Costs a fraction here and there is a doc who does hospital water births. He just designed the new birth center at the hospital and had them put in jacuzzis and a birthing tub! How cool is that?!

in another DDC and saw your post. which state are you in? some states, like NY, have laws that dictate insurance must cover midwifery care if they don't provide any in network. worth checking into - since your insurance rep may not be completely in the know...

ETA - if that's not an option, you might be able to find a family practice doc (if your pregnancy is low risk) who would be willing to do prenatal care and come to your home during an 'emergency' labor. Its a long shot - but worth checking into. I've found 'family docs' to be a lot more human than obs. don't give up. go to the homebirth forum and let the wise ladies there brainstorm for you!

That sucks! I can't imagine how frustrating that would be for you. I agree, check out the homebirth section and see if anyone there can help you out or point you in the right direction. There has to be some option for you?

thats just WRONG imo.. its not right.. how can it Not be covered? wouldn't it cost much less than a hospirtal birth?

im in canada, and where i live its covered.. at least midwifery care is, which is. but in some places in canada its not and in some places it is still illegal to have a homebirth. :

I was told that a homebirth wouldn't be covered either, but the midwife group that I'm seeing are all CNM's and can bill the insurance. They just don't bill for a "homebirth" they bill for midwife services That's how we're getting around that!

ThreeBeans, what do they consider an "emergency"? Maybe you could "arrange" for an emergency - say, your labor is so short you don't have time to get to the hospital?

It is not covered for us either...had to pay out of pocket last time. It does stink! We are not sure what we will be doing for the birth this time....
