Doll Skin Fabric

I would love to make some standing puppets for my children, but I am having a doozy of a time finding the jearsey knit in flesh tones at my local fabric stores. The Magic Cabin prices seem outrageous. Any suggestions?

Seems like I have 2 unopened packs of doll making jersey knit in a caucasian tone and a darker coffee colored tone. Maybe AA tone. Not sure..i'd have to look in all my sewing stuff.

I'd sell it to ya

When I made my waldorf dolls I dyed the tee-shirt fabric with tea. IT worked beautifully! I actully used resycled white tees, but you can do the same with fabric off the bold, just wash it first. I used black tea! HTH!

i have had a lot of luck finding skin tone jersey shirts at Value Village and other second hand stores. i find that an adult long sleeve shirt can make a 16" doll no problem. i like this source because i can find nice subltly(sp?) different skin tones and fabric that has the right thickness to the knit.

I was going to say that Joy's Waldorf Dolls sells 100% Organic cotton by the yard ($13.95) and 1/2 yard ($7.50), but it looks like others had some great suggestions anyway!

My friend and I went in on a yard together, and we got FOUR 16" dolls out of the yard with enough left over to make at least two smaller dolls! We were surprised!

Can anyone give me a step-by-step for dyeing a tshirt with tea? I was planning on just stirring it in a pot of tea and water for awhile, and then drying it.

This is the best quality skin tone knit available and holds up well to lots of play and the occasional scrubbing-

Amy Prentiss is a homeschooling WAHM and super sweet person. She will sell it in 1/2 yard lengths if you only need a small amount and coach you through the doll making process if you need help. The quality really makes a difference in the outcome of the doll and is well worth the money. This super high quality knit is the same price per yard as the inferior stuff other places are selling, but far better at resisting pilling, runs and holes.

I love the idea of recycled tee shirts for doll making, but the skin tone knit sold above is an interlock, or doubleknit. Tee shirts are usually singleknit. So this will have some impact on how your patterns may work and there is the issue of poking a hole in the fabric, while sewing or embroidering the facial features on a Waldorf type of doll. The stretch of the knit is an important feature and should not be too stretchy, in order to give the best appearance and work well with the wool rolling and stuffing method. HTH

I just read the PP and then thought to myself, "You know, this is a good question for E.V Lowi..." Um, duh, no wonder that was such a good post....

I second this suggestion. Amy has the best skin fabric, I've found.
