Conceiving following a c/s?

Is there a consensus regarding an adaquete length of time for the scar to heal before one should try to conceive again? I realize that plenty of women may have gotten pregnant again quickly, w/no problem, but I was looking more for actual guidelines or any evidence suggesting a specific time frame.

A friend of mine is thinking about #2, and had a c/s for #1.

Thanks!

There is a lot of debate about this and it may also depend on the scar on your uterus. If you have a vertical scar I have read that you should really wait two years, but if you have a horizontal scare a year is sufficient. Getting pregnant too soon can make adhesions work, some believe it increases your rupture rate and placental issues. I dont think you will find anything hard and concrete scientifically on the matter though.

I have heard to try to wait 18 months between births (meaning mama could get pregnant when c-section baby is 9-10 months). I agree with OnTheFence though, data would be hard to find and the opinions probably vary widely.

Maybe your friend could call her care provider and ask what their protocols are.

Uterine rupture rates increase when deliveries are fewer than 2 years apart. The latest study in Obstetrics and Gynecology showed this to be a factor likely to increase your risk of rupture (data is included in a table in the study). Most care providers want you to have at least 18 months in between deliveries if you want a vbac.

My MIL had vertical scars and delivered children 13 months apart but they delivered the second one a month early.
