ARGHHHHHH! Just my luck. Advice?

I met with my midwife today. If I didn't like her so much I may have strangled her!!!

She confessed to me that she got my dates mixed up..........

and is going on vacation from January 22nd to the early afternoon of February 4th!

Ummmmm, I'm 'due' on the 9th. My cycles vary, I wasn't charting other than my period. I could easily swing either way. I'm hoping I'll go later like I did with my first child.

She felt really really bad. Granted she has been under a ton of stress. She had her knee replaced 5 weeks ago and it isn't healing well and you can see in her face that she's in a lot of pain. She's keeping up with her midwifery clients but has taken another month off of her college teaching job. She's told me that every cent will be refunded if she misses the birth. That makes me feel a little better since we're paying $2000 out of pocket but this is my last child, my only hope for a homebirth. There aren't ANY other midwives anywhere near here.

My options, if I go into labor while my midwife is gone, as I see them:

1)have an unassisted homebirth ----I'm leary about having the baby at home, unassisted, mainly because we are an hour away from a fully staffed hospital if there is an emergency. My family would also freak out--- and I REALLY want my Mom there this time. They all live within minutes of me. I'm a complete pacifist, conflict stresses me out to no end.

2)labor at home until the last possible minute and go to our local hospital (literally less than a block from our house).----- This is a hospital that doesn't normally handle L&D patients due to too few Dr's and no anethesiologist or surgeon on staff, basically it's an emergency room/geriatric hospital. 3 Dr's for the clinic and hospital here. 75% of the time there isn't a Dr. in the building. The other downside is that if I wait to go there until the baby is ready to be born they will probably call the Dr. who lives in town. He's a quack AND a really really big jerk (and I don't call names easily). If I go in early enough to be able to call my own Dr. then the hospital will probably send me, by ambulance, to the big hospital an hour away. I can't give my Dr. the heads up, she could get into way too much trouble with her practice and the hospital if they find out she had prior knowledge of me planning to birth there.

3)just suck it up and go to the big hospital an hour away. I didn't have a bad experiance there last time but it isn't what I want. Again, I'd have whatever OB is on call. I'd have to be pretty outspoken to get around their normal way of doing things. I don't want to have to fight to be able to birth on my hands and knees, you know?

I'm really sad about this, you guys. I know that the chance are reasonable that baby will stay put until the 4th but one never knows. Doesn't help that the full moon is February 1st.

So I know that most mamas DON'T want to go late---please feel free to send all those vibes this way, I'll gladly take them!

The good news is baby girl is transverse, which is why there has been less sharp movement. My midwife helped me navigate my belly so now I know where all her little arms and legs are. It also explains my funny flat spot on my belly! We figure she's a good size already! (My first daughter was 9lbs 10 oz---doesn't phase me in the least!)

Well only you know what it right for you. That does suck that you won't know what happens until it comes down to it. I am surprised she doesn't have a backup. It sounds like you are a great candidate for a UC though! (Always trying to recruit )

I am always late so I rub some of that off on you and maybe I will actually go on this babe's due date!

That sux mama! But you know 2nd babies sometimes come so fast that you wouldn't have time to get to the big hospital or have MW come anyway. But I hope that the baby waits for the MW and you get the HB that you want.

I'm sorry! Thats not the kind of stress you want towards the end. I hope the baby waits and you get the homebirth that you want. I'm sending you all my late baby vibes as I want this one to come early (I don't want this baby to share a b-day with my MIL ).

sending you "late baby" vibes!

I second that you can have my late baby vibes! I'd like the babe to have his/her own b-day not have to share with my hubby 3/8

I bet it will all work out for your own m/w to be there. Once a momma gets in her mind she isn't going to labor or birth...it is amazing what can happen. I have seen it happen several times with some of my doula clients.
