Sore on breast - cannot nurse

Help! I can't nurse on my left side at all and I need advice.

On Tuesday morning I went to my regular dermatologist appointment (I'm highish risk for melanoma and need regular body scans). There was a growth immediately next to my nipple. It looked like a skin-tag but it was hard. The derm didn't think it was bad, necessarily, but said he wanted to remove it so as not to take any chances.

He said he would merely shave it off, and that it should heal quickly and I'd be able to nurse in a day or two. There were no stitches.

Yesterday (day #2), I tried to nurse, and it hurt a lot. This morning I tried again and it hurt much, much worse. It is very sting-y, and there is no way I can nurse through the pain. It is still very red and open-looking.

I have two questions:

1) What is the best way to heal a sore on the breast (right next to nipple)?

2) How long can I go without nursing on the left side before it "dries up"? And when my son starts nursing on that side again, will it be difficult to get that breast producing a lot of milk again? He is 2, so it's not like I am full of milk at this point like when he was a tiny baby, and he doesn't generally nurse a lot (averages about 4 times a day, I'd say) so I suppose that is a consideration as well.

I am very disappointed about this.

I would try neosporin on the sore, and I might try pumping on that side if you can't nurse there to preserve the milk supply. It there's no imrpovement by tomorrow, I'd call the doctor back!

Just be sure to remove the neosporin before nursing or pumping.

maybe try using Soothies (or something similar). they're supposed to be great to heal cracked/wounded nipples, and then you don't have to worry about washing anything off when you're pumping. and definitely try pumping on that side at least a little bit. lubricating with some olive oil or lanolin might help to make things a little more comfortable while pumping. good luck mama!

maybe try hand expressing, so that you can avoid the sore spot? checking in with the doc sounds like a good idea as well. hang in there...
