Coconut Oil.....for BFing Difficulties

I am missing a piece of my nipple & it hurts like crazy, Ds bit me & took a chunk out about 1.5 weeks ago & it will NOT heal. I don't want to use the vit E oil (it's in a gelcap & is food grade) because it's based in soybean oil, blech. The lanolin just ain't doin' squat. I have been wearing a Soothie so my clothing doesn't get stuck to the open wound & tear off the scab every time I pull my top down to nurse, oh needless to say, nursing hurts on the left side.

Since coconut oil has such healing properties, I've been contemplating using it - is it safe for an almost 9 month old to ingest? It's not a high allergy food, right? I lather it all over him after showers, so he must've ingested a bit before just from gumming his own body, yk?

Oh yes! It is wonderful! I give my twins 1 tsp. virgin coconut oil a day in their cereal and vegetables. Since they are stuck on the SNS, I am giving them as much immune fighting properties that I can. Virgin Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is also a component of breastmilk. It is an anti-viral property. Dr. Mercola (mercola.com) has an infant formula protocal that recommends that virgin coconut oil be given to infants. I didn't start until my guys were 6 mo. old. They did have a slight rash. I didn't know if it was was from the oil or something else. I would stop from time to time. From about 8 mo. on, I haven't had any problems.

Thanks Mama, I got a lot of responses from the folks over in Traditional Foods as well!

Not that this was your question, but you might want to try Ameda brand Comfort Gels instead of Soothies. They aren't as sticky as Soothies, and they last longer. Here's some info on moist wound healing...

Hope it helps!
