Why isn't he gaining weight?

I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out why ds isn't gaining weight. He is 3 months old & has not gained any weight in almost 5 weeks. He's been having green stools & spitting up all the time which I'm sure is the reason he's not gaining. I'm really worried about him and I don't know what to do.

I'm almost sure he's getting enough, I don't think I have any supply issues. He was gaining weight fine for the first 2.5 months of his life and was in the 95th percentile. He's now in the 50th which I realize is still "ok" but I am still concerned about the weight loss, spitting up puddles, green stools, etc.

I've block fed to rule out a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and I cut dairy/eggs out of my diet for the last two weeks. All with no improvement. If anything I really think he's spitting up more since I've cut the dairy out. :

He's had very resistant thrush off and on all his life and I'm wondering if it's possible the yeast is taking over and that is causing all these problems??

I don't know what to do. Everyone keeps telling me I need to supplement and they're making me feel like it's my fault he's losing weight and if I would start supplementing then he'd be fine.

Why was he doing so well only to stop gaining after a few months??

How long are you block feeding? I had to block feed in 5-6 hour intervals the first 3-4 months to prevent colicky behavior. I still need to go 3-4 hour intervals or she starts puking and screaming.

That sounds to me like a gastro-intestinal problem with the baby. Has the doctor cultured the green poop? Have they done any ultrasound to make sure the tummy can empty all the way?

The supplement will only make things worse. If it is absolutely neccesary, then I would only do it with a SNS and after first nursing at the breast. You want to find out what is going on here though. Can you see a IBCLC or La Leche League Leader? This is where you get the best help. Be careful though and really test out whatever you are told. You want to make sure that your baby does not get hooked on supplement. There are number of problems that a good IBCLC could detect - palate issue that affect suckling, tonque tie, low thyroid, etc... My second daughter had the green stools. She also had a weight problem. The things I have read about that is that the milk comes fast and the baby gets mostly foremilk rather than hind milk. I have read that it is recommended that the baby nurse each time at just one breast. That way the baby get fore and hind milk. The next nursing go to the other breast that was not nursed on. I am not sure how that would work though on stimulation. I would think it is good to get stimulation on both breasts. You might want to look into this. What I did with my daughter is just make sure she stayed at the breast longer so that she got the hind milk. This did the trick for me. I hope that you get some answers.

It honestly sounds like a food allergy. They often get progressively worse which could be why you are seeing a decrease in weight now. Have you though of cutting out anything else? Gluten and dairy would be the top two I'd think of...followed by soy and eggs. Since you have eliminated dairy and eggs and you feel the spitting up is worse, what have you replaced those foods with? Are you now eating more soy to make up for the loss of dairy? Just a thought...

My ds2 sounds alot like your little one. Once the allergens were out the spitting up stopped. HTH.
