O..M...G...i may be shooting myself in the foot here but knock on wood.... i rocked dd a bit but she kept trying to suck on my arm and wouldn't take the paci and shes been doing this all day (i smell like baby spit!) so i put her down in her crib all swaddled and turned on the music mobile (which ironically and i didn't know is the same tune i have been ho humming to her to get her to sleep) and she fussed a bit when it turned off so i went back and rewound it and now she is not making a sound!!......its only been a few minutes but thats longer than she would ever allow me to put her down if she was tired!!

with ds we really fought to get him to learn how to put himself to sleep and i was totally dreading it this time around and have been putting it off cause i would have to do it by myself. before you get your panties in a wad it wasn't cry it out but it wasn't me putting him to sleep completely...think hours of soothing putting down picking up soothing...etc. :

did your children learn to do this on their own? when? what did they do to signal they were ready?

as i posted in another thread she has been "singing" with me the last few days...a precurser to self soothing to sleep??? me thinks maybe....i hope!!
knock on wood again....hehe

That's great! My dd was probably around 18 months or so. But that's when she started sleeping on her own, in her own bed.

Hannah falls asleep on her own in the evenings fairly often. I try to keep her up from about 4:30 til 7:30 or 8, and often in that time she'll fall asleep looking at her mobile or watching me in the kitchen. I put her down somewhat awake a lot, though. I normally nurse her to sleep, and then hold her for another 5-10 minutes, then put her in her laundry basket. If she wakes up during the transfer she'll 'complain' but not cry (yeah, I'm not hardcore AP) and be out in 1-2 minutes. She does that maybe half the time, the other half she doesn't wake up.

On another note, she slept from 10:15 to 5 when the alarm went off this morning! Oh my! I'm guessing it was a fluke, but that was a surprise. I think I get more sleep when she wakes up a couple times, I was all nervous and checked her breathing like every hour after 1 am

I totally relate to the exhaustion of wondering if the baby is breathing when they sleep so long.

For us, we figured out that Isa likes to go to sleep herself through exasperation. She would just cry and cry and cry and nothing we could do would get her asleep for more than a few minutes. Finally, to prevent child abuse, I put her down in her sleeping spot in our bed and walked away. She stopped crying almost immediately and fell asleep. So now that is part of our nighttime routine. Nurse nurse nurse, rock a bunch, and then set her down in bed and just continue with our evening routine (knitting, watching a movie, brushing teeth, maybe making love?, etc). She goes to sleep as long as we stay near her and she can hear our breathing or talking. If we leave before she's asleep she gets very upset. But really, she needed us to stop messing with her. She found all of our calming techniques to be very distracting and disruptive and just needed to be let alone.

Who knew?!

Whoo hoo! Knocking on wood too for you Dhinderliter!
Hope it continues. DD#1 would nurse then go to sleep in the bassinette in our room by the bed. I very seldom rocked her off to sleepy land. She would just close her sweet eyes and drift off. Ds#1 needed to be rocked, jiggled, sung, read and hand held until he went to sleep. Some nights he still is very clingy and needs an extensive bedtime routine to go off to the land of nod (just turned 4). Baby J has been 50/50 thus far.
She has slept through the nights 4/7 of the last week. Each child has been different. Each one has challenged our parenting in a different way. I think we should have a 4th, becuase it would be a waste to let all this knowledge go by the wayside. Someone should benefit! ha ha ha ... don't think he sees things the same way.

I wrote this in the life with a babe thread, Ariennes just started doing it in the last week, it's the sweetest thing!

Congratz! So far Arienne still needs to be bounced and rocked, apart from late at night she will just nurse to sleep.

Nadia has been taking her morning nap and going to bed in the evening like this! It's SOOO nice because like you the older ones were terrors to get them to fall asleep with out some sort of method. I am VERY appriciative!

She's also started to do that hummy singy thing. It's adorable!
