I'm not really sure what i"m trying to ask here, but here goes. What I've always wanted to do is buy some different colored plates from the thrift store, break them up in to little pieces and make some kind of small mural out of them (with grout). I was thinking this would be neat to do for christmas gifts, but what would I make that is small and inexpensive? Like a picture frame or some kind of trivet? also, what would I mount the pieces on? and would I use glue? Does anyone have experience with this type of thing? I would appreciate any ideas!! Thanks.

You can buy plain unfinished wood picture frames at craft stores. Cover the wood with mastic (if memory serves, that's the name of the stuff, look for tile adhesives at the hardware store), then stick the plate fragments on. Following the package directions for drying times, let dry then smear grout in the cracks and wipe off the excess.
I did something similar by glueing a piece of mirror to the middle of 1/4" plywood and putting tiles around the edges.
