One of the ironies of homeschooling...

My dearest friend has always parented quite similiar to me, with the exception of schooling. Her son goes to public school, and she herself is very involved helping out there.

We live in different states, but talk on the phone several times a week. She is always after her son to sit down and do homework after school (he is in kindergarten). She seems so disappointed that he is the only child who doesn't finish schoolwork and is thus sent home with not only his homework but ALSO his unfinished schoolwork. Apparently he is the only child who has this problem regularly and it really bothers her. She seems certain he can do it but isn't trying.

I've made very small remarks alluding to being surprised that he has homework at all, or is expected to do schoolwork after school at his age. And small comments like "Wow, when I was in kindergarten it was only half a day, and included recess, nap and snack and story times". She agrees it was like that for her too. But it doesn't stop her from expecting him to spend his time afterschool everday on more schoolwork.

We generally don't give advice to each other unless asked (probably why we have been friends for so long LOL) and mainly just listen to each other gripe about whatever bothers us.

So I am doing that. But I guess I just have to vent somewhere how much this BOTHERS me. I am shocked her ds spends all day at school and then spends all his time after school on more paperwork.

He is in kindergarten!!

I guess I am just worried this will continue next year when teachers aren't so forgiving of children who fall behind all day on their work. And someone will suggest something is wrong with him or tell her he should be on drugs and it will all spin out of control.

I did not have homework until middle elementary school. I am just so speechless. I am worried for them

I am always shocked at kindgergartners having homework too. I send my kids to one of the most academic ps sysyems in the country but Kindergarten involves 1/2 day of playing and maybe doing some work with letters and numbers, at school, for a few minutes a day. (like singing a song about apples and airplanes for the letter A.) There are some worksheets done at school but the teacher does not care if some kids don't want to do them.

The kids from our school district end up at Harvard and Yale and have a very tough High School. But kindergarten is lovely and stress free.
