Is this normal? Back-arching, not crawling....

My 11 month-old dd is healthy, happy, and sweet. When her twin brother started crawling two months ago, and she was just happy sitting up playing with me or a toy, I chalked it up to different babies, different styles. Plus, dd is socially interactive, does lots of babbling and so on, so it seemed like she was fine. But now as we are fast approaching their 1st birthday and she's still not crawling, I admit I'm starting to get a little worried. It's not helped much by the fact that ds is crawling everywhere, pulling up, and starting to cruise. Here's my question...

My dd does not like generally being on her belly. She will get onto her belly for just long enough to reach for a toy, then roll over to play with it. She can do a full push-up, head up, etc, but doesn't get her belly off the floor much. She can cover maybe a couple of feet of ground moving toward a toy, but it's through a combination of rolls, pivots, and uncoordinated "scoots". Also, when she is on her belly, she tends to tuck her left arm under her chest, and is reluctant to use that arm to play with or reach for a toy. She usually likes rolling over to that side, so it's almost as though she's protecting her ability to do a quick roll-over! The other thing is, she is much stiffer than ds. She arches her back sometimes and prefers to be straighted out - she's not a baby who sits in a lap happily all curled up. I still put pillows behind her when she sits, because every once in a while she does a back dive. I stopped doing this for ds a long time ago.

IS THIS NORMAL? : : Did any of you have babies like this who are now totally fine? Am I worrying myself over nothing?

I really don't think the relatively late crawling is anything to worry about. What struck me was you saying that she arches her back. That can be a sign of a back that's out of whack, and can be helped by a chiropractor. Has she always done that, or is it new? Seeing a pediatric chiropractor might help that.

Mrzmeg - thanks for the quick reply. Re: back-arching... it seems more related to general stiffness caused by "high" muscle tone than back problems per se. But it does make me think about benefits of stretching, etc. I'll check it out.
