Lyme Disease and Breastfeeding?

I have some mystery flu-like illness that keeps lingering and we are beginning to suspect Lyme Disease (trying to get a doctor appointment soon). I haven't found much about Doxycycline (usual treatment as far as I know) and breastfeeding but it looks like it isn't great to take. Any ideas or BTDT?

My nurslings are 2.7 and 1 year old and won't take bottles or EBM in a cup (not that I've tried really, but neither has interest in EBM in a cup). Both nurse multiple times during the day/night. To wean even for a day would be quite traumatic for them.

Thanks!

Hello! I'm sorry you are being faced with this! Lyme's is no fun at all. I found a link for you - Kellymom.com has this page:
http://www.kellymom.com/health/illne...e-disease.html

It says there are medications that can be used to treat it if you're nursing. It doesn't, however, list them.

If it turns out that you do have Lyme's, please don't hesitate to post again - a lot of us here (myself included) have Dr. Hale's book and we can look up medications in it for you. A lactation consultant will also be able to do that and may even consult with your doctor on what treatment would be appropriate for you.

I hope that's not what it is

Thanks! I have an appt Thursday and will post either way. I doubt it's Lyme but we have so many deer ticks here that I want to make sure. I have a great LC who also has Hale's. It seems that MDs tend to be clueless on these issues.

Thanks!

i had lyme disease this summer and my DD was exclusively BFed. i wazs on amoxicillin for 4 weeks. along with the amox. i took high doses of acidophillus to avoid thrush and it worked. the bacteria that the tick causes does not pass through the bmilk. i hope you feel better. colleen

lyme DOES pass in breastmilk

I don't want to alarm, but yes, the Bb bacteria that cause Lyme disease CAN be transmitted via breastmilk. i contracted Lyme when pregnant, 3 weeks of antibiotics was NOT enough. i then breastfed my DS for 3 1/2 years. a wonderful experience and a BAD CHOICE because of lyme.

Oh, how i wish I had known!!!!!!

DON"T TAKE THE CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
