Organics home delivery

I signed up to be a part of a co-op for local delivery of boxes of organic produce. On the one hand, I'm excited, because it's a lot of variety, nice big boxes, for less than it would cost to buy the stuff in the store, possibly less than it would be to buy comparable amounts of conventional produce. I have a hard time buying produce--even in the summer I'm always meaning to go to the farmers' market and never seem to go, then when I do go it's been so long that I overbuy. The box is all the produce we'd need aside from something specific for a recipe, and even then, if I plan, I can pick substitutions, order more one week, skip a week--it's all very flexible.

But otoh, it's $33/week for the box. I won't be picking it myself, so the chance of a bruised fruit or something. It's more produce than we eat/spend now, but only because we often go a week without fresh produce bc of my poor planning. : I can see how it makes sense--no store, fewer employees, etc, and it seems like a good deal--but it still seems like $132/month for produce is an awful lot!

Tell me this was a smart thing to do!
(Btw, if it doesn't work out, we can cancel, or go bi-weekly, or whatever.)

Also, we're doing is as part of a co-op and part of the cost goes to support the local birth center (where I will never birth bc I do homebirth, but I go to all kinds of groups and really benefit from the community there, and I like the chance to give back without costing me anything more than I'd spend anyway.) The only difference with the benefit co-op is it gets delivered to a home in my neighborhood instead of direct to my door.

Am I being sucked in to something silly? I don't think so, but $132 is a lot of money!

Okay, I don't really have advice, but I'm in your area and am very interested in hearing more about this opportunity. Would you be willing to PM me the info?

We've done an organic box delivered to our house for a couple years now. It sounds very similar to the one you are getting. It runs about 32/week. I actually am just finishing a month of having my delivery stopped-I wanted to see what life was like without it. At first it seemed ok but I noticed towards the end of that month I was really slacking on having fresh veggies and fruit in the house. I can often go longer that a week without going to the store but I run out of produce.

Here, I think it might be a little more expensive to get the box than to shop at the store. Needless to say after the end of the month of no produce box, we are starting back up again this week and the whole house is happy about it!

We get a produce box too. We pay about $40 per week (this is because we actually get two small boxes from two different farms that are delivered on different days : ) What I mostly notice is that we eat significantly more produce than we used to. We make a conscious effort to eat stuff from the produce box in every meal, because otherwise our fridge quickly gets full of it and we can't keep up with it! This also has the effect that we never even feel tempted to get takeout any more, because it would just make it that much harder to consume our produce allocation... Anyway, for our family it's had a positive effect on our eating habits and we're very happy with it.

On the other hand my sister thought it was such a good idea that now she gets a produce box too, and she pretty much just lets the produce pile up in her fridge and then throws it out!

You say $33 per week for veggies is a lot, what do you normally spend on groceries per week? If you spend about $100 per week, that's only a third of your budget and looking at your plate when you're eating, a third of it (at least) should be filled with vegetables and fruits. Is that a better way to look at it?

I am looking at it for 2007 and I think for my family, its worth the extra money. The reason, my girls are young and I want it to be a priority to eat fresh produce forever in their lives. We also keep a garden, but I want them to see different ideas about our local produce. It is about a grand for the year, due early on but I think it will be worth it. Besides, if it cuts into our sweets and french fry budget, GOOD!!

I JUST signed up for Door-to-Door organics in Michigan. I got the large box because my husband and I are vegan and big eaters It's $55 but saves us driving 45 minutes to get the nearest good organic produce. You can also add to it and make up to 3 substitutions.

eta: their boxes range from $23-$55 and you can choose every week or every other week

I wish that we had something like that in this area but I have not found anything other than the CSA's which during that tiem of the year we don't have a hard time keeping the fresh produce in the house it is more in the winter time that we have the problems.

Can you share your box with another family? We did the MSU student farm CSA for a while and shared it. We still had plenty of food. Also, if you do keep this up, get the book, From Asparagus to Zucchini. http://shop.wisconsinhistory.org/pro...6&idproduct=49
ELFCO sells it and it's really helpful. We use it all of the time now, even though we're not doing a CSA.

We quit the CSA b/c we wasted too much food. We just buy seasonally at the co-op now. I get wanting to support the birth center, but I don't think I would spend that much on just produce if you're not used to eating that many veggies. I hate wasting food and we wasted a lot with our CSA.

Subbing because I'm really considering starting up organic produce delivery here. We have three box options, $30, 40 & 50...I think I'll start with the $40 box and hope that we don't let it go to waste.

I wanted to add that getting a box cuts down on my trips to the store, which saves me money in the long run... No impulse buys, etc.

This is a big one for me. I am the queen the impulse grocery purchases if I'm not careful.

Swimswamswum, it's not more than we eat in the normal week, it's just that many weeks I don't end up buying produce. It's probably just a big less than I use in a normal, "did the shopping on time and didn't go crazy with exotic produce or ongredients for a big project I won't even have time for" week.

I feel better about it now. I know it's really not much more than we spend now, and that it's every week will encourage us to eat more healthfully, and probably waste less since I'll get out of that mood of not having borught produce in two weeks and way overbuying.

It's just the per-week cost that seems high, but it's not that bad really. I'm just the kind of person who would rather spend a dollar fifteen times and ten bucks once, kwim? It's a bad habit.

That's cool. I misunderstood.

If you have a chance, get that book. It is written for CSA users and has four or five recipes for every veggie that you might get.

we get a box here. as far as waste goes, if we have produce still around by the time the next delivery is due (rare) i just juice it - its easier to drink a glass of juice than to eat 2 lbs of fruit....

We used to get produce delivered but we did it every other week. That worked well for us because we often got oddball stuff like kohlrabi that we did't even know what to do with. The opposite weeks we went to the store for produce and "filled in" with the things we liked that weren't in the box, and could adjust how much we bought based on what was left from the delivered stuff.

We get a box of organic produce delivered every other week. It is $32 per box I think? Really fantastic. Seemed expensive to me at first but it isn't really. We eat more produce; it is organic; if we are eating more produce then we must be eating a little less of something less healthy, right?

What I love is that they email you a few days before the box comes - with the list of what will be included. You can then (all online - so handy) switch out up to three items for other items of your choice - new things or double up on stuff in the box that you'd use more of). I think it is great!
