And Yet ANOTHER carseat question

I know that having something between baby and carseat is a no-no.

How-a-bout something between the carseat and the car's seat?
Our friend, has 2 DD, told us that carseats really tear up the car's seat. The best way he found to combat that is to use heavy cardboard between the two.

I'm really skeptical about this. My first instinct is to say this is a no-no and is dangerous. Does someone know for sure so I'm not just going off gut feeling here?

(i'm not really feeling his carseat knowledge here as he didn't known carseats had an expiration date)

We use a purpose-made rubber mat under ours. In the past we've used towels too - we were shown to do this by an car-seat expert in our last car to get the fit right.

the towels make sense to me, as does the pool noodle, to even things out and get a firm/tight fit.

i used the grip stuff that you put under rugs, works great and is safe.

If a parent comes in w/ a towel under their seat, I see how attached they are to it and then I see if they mind getting rid of it. I really prefer (as do most carseat manufacturers) to have nothing between the vehicle seat and the carseat. If they really did damage to seats, I would defitely be adding something to my brand new 06 van, but I don't b/c it's a non-issue. I find you get more wear and tear on vehicle seats from improperly secured seats b/c they tend to slide around and wear the interior.

I'd say, in a wide-eyed "WOW" shocked, totally-in-disbelief kind of voice "Wow, I can't believe you value your car's interior more than your children's lives!"

As a different tactic, I would suggest he maybe use something more like a towel, as opposed to cardboard....to me, fitting the seat against a towle laying on the seat is going to get a better tighter fit, as the towel will be almost like a cloth-upholstered seat, you know? The cardboard seesm like it would really inhibit getting a good tight fit.

I also agree wioth Jennifer...if you put the seat in at it is nice and toght and cant move...it isn't going to hurt your seat...we just took dd's seat she outgrew out (it had been installed for like a year) and the seat had this huge deep dent in it.I was appalled, I'll admit....after about 2 days, it was gone. The seat puffed back up, the fabric fluffed out...you'd never know there was a seat there. (We noticed becausae we ended up putting her new seat in a different position, LOL! )

Anyway...i'm the kind of persona who thinks people who are overyl concerned about appearances/looks is generally unhealthy mentally anyway...someone who would value the beauty of their cloth/leather/whatever their car seat is made out of over their child's safety....well....I'm sure that person wouldn't like me a whole lot.

One carseat I tested out said, in the manual, to use a thin towel to protect the carseat (the Evenflo Chase, I believe). I would think a thin towel would be safe unless it specifically says not to in the manual.
I would not use thick cardboard. That doesn't seem safe to me (not sure why though)

How about a seat cover? My mom has a jeep and wants to buy covers for the seats. I've told her no way. She keeps telling me its skin tight. I keep telling her it could slip.

Any opinions?

I would not put a seat cover between a seat and car seat.

Yup, and if anyone comes into a check w/ one of those, I try and get them to take it out (no one has said no yet, lol).

If a seat was installed correctly, a true seat cover shouldn't pose a problem as it's thin and it's material and does fit close to the seat. If someone was using it just as protection for the seat though, it's not needed IMO.

The most I use in an install (with really slippery leather seats) is a piece of cabinet drawer lining (the rubbery stuff) cut to fit the base of the car seat (and this is very seldom). WARNING: Although it's never happened to me or anyone I know of, use caution with the shelf liner because it *can* melt to your vehicle seat (sunny weather locales).
