Broken clavicle...

Thread Starter
My 3 year old broke his clavicle The doctor at the hospital prescribed tylenol w/codeine for the pain but said there wasn't much that could be done since it isn't a bone that they can cast, etc...

I was wondering if anyone has herbal suggestions. I know arnica doesn't help with bones, though I was thinking it still might help with the bruised tissue *around* the break...I know comfrey is the best thing for a broken bone, but I am really not sure how to give it to him...I can get ahold of dried comfrey, but not fresh...anyone have suggestions? TIA!

I don't have any advice, but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry about your little one! I hope he heals quickly.

I remember my brother having his arm in a sling and having it strapped across his chest when he broke his clavicle at 2.5 yrs. I know lots of things change in medicine in 25 years, but I wonder if some immobilization would help it be less painful?

interesting. My sister broke hers 3 TIMES! Each time she had a brace that wrapped around your shoulder for support. Please go seek another opinion. Also, I would see if there is something else to give him other than the Tylenol with Codeine. I am always concerned about allergic reactions with this one. (I am allergic. Didn't know until I took it. So I was sick on top of everything else. )

Mama, go get a second opinion. I looked up treatment on a few diffrent websites and they all same about the same thing:

How is it treated?

Most broken collarbones heal on their own, and surgery is rarely needed. You will use a sling to keep your arm and shoulder from moving while the bone heals. An adult wears a sling for a few days or up to a week; a child may need one for 3 to 4 weeks. A figure-8 strap may also be used, especially in children. The strap may need to be adjusted occasionally to keep the shoulder in the correct position.

Hugs to your lil one.

My ds broke his clavicle a year ago, age 2. The hospital gave us a sling but he wouldn't wear it, so I'm assuming it did not make a dramatic effect on the pain. We did give him a couple of doses of tylenol, but he didn't need it after maybe the third day. He began to use his arm again and then was fine, except for a big bumpy lump on the bone (which has almost gone now).

Some herbs that might help heal are things high in calcium and other bone-building minerals. Nettles, oats, raspberry leaf are all good and safe for kids. You could mix them with peppermint or lemon balm for flavour.

Hope he heals soon!

That's what my sister wore all three times, a figure 8 strap!!!!! If it weren't for that, she would have been in agony instead of just uncomfortable and achey.

my daughter broke her collar bone when she was 2, and then it broke in the same place 6 months later. They didnt do anything at all either time.

Homeopathic Symphytum 30C or higher will help the healing.
