80's Progressive music

Lately I've been listening to my favorite music from when I was in High School. Which consists of the "progressive" now termed "alternative" music. As you can see by my sig. I've been listening to the Smiths a lot. They are truly timeless imo, and I'm shocked that I still know almost every word to most of their songs!
I also listened to a Yaz CD, the one with Mr. Blue on it? It's not so timeless :LOL. I got out the Depeche Mode "Music for the Masses" CD too, and it's not so great to me anymore either. Modern English is still good to me.
Do any of you even remember when alternative music was called progressive, or was that just happening in my region?
The Cure is always good too, though it's been a while since I've listened to their more mainstream stuff. I haven't listened to Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me in many years, and though it was the album that first introduced me to them, it's not my favorite anymore. I love 17 seconds, such a cool mood CD. Pornography (was that the name of that CD) is so violent, that I haven't listened to it in a while, cause I remember really wanting to slit my wrists in a fit of teenage angst! I was totally in love with Robert Smith for much of my teenage years! What a hottie. Does anybody know what he's up to now or what he looks like?
Anyone else care to go down memory lane with me. I'm sure I'm forgetting some good bands!

Marcy,
I have digital cable, which includes a bunch of music channels. One of the channels is New Wave. It plays the progressive music of the 80's. It ROCKS! I love it! Right now I can't think of any other bands than the ones you mentioned. There is also a channel called Progressive/Adult Alternative. It plays cool current music. Dh and I call most indie rock and college music "progressive". I think it's very much different than "alternative" which these days refers to bands such as Creed and Godsmack.

When I think of progressive I think of Prog Rock - early genesis, Yes, King Crimson...

But I was a listener of what you are talking about. DM was my world!

Does anyone remember Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy, Concrete Blonde, the Primitives, The Jesus and Mary Chain or the like? I was the biggest Smith's and later Morrisey fan around. I went to his concert while I was pg w/dd. Wow! The Cure was awsome too- Standing on a Beach was my favorite. Oh, memories. How about the Pixies?

OMG! I LOVE The Jesus and Mary Chain and the Pixies!

My Dh introduced me to the Violent Femmes, and we're still huge fans(saw them in concert once too) I guess they would be considered "New Wave".

A few months ago i went out to get our favorite Smiths tape on cd and had a hard time finding the exact one I wanted, but it was amazing the responses i got from store clerks when i went in, they were genuinely impressed and enjoyed the idea of helping me find it. I finally found it at Harmony House(RIP) and the clerk gave me his employee discount just because The Smiths" are that cool" We still love the music of our youth Echo and The Bunnymen, The Alarms, Siuoxsie and The Banshees,'The Cure. I still blast Yaz's Upsairs at erics. I just could go on and on.....

YES!!! I forgot Peter Murphy and what was that band of his called? They had the song "Bela Ligosi's Dead" Didn't it start with a B? They played that song in that kick-butt vampire movie with Bowie, the Hunted or something like that. Damn, my memory stinks!
Pixies rocked!

I'm about to date myself and sound my age (22)....watch out.....

When I think of "Progressive" I think of Progressive Trance and Progressive House ala Paul Oakenfold or Sasha + John Digweed. Modern day commercial electronica.

Don't ask me why I think of them - I don't enjoy todays electronica at all. I guess the radio has rotted my brain....

Yup, and I'm gonna date myself, too (40) and that's where I was at in high school. Was offended at the thought of Gabriel-less Genesis, would concede to listen to "Trick of the Tail," but nothing after ...

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ...

Back to your '80s reveries, ladies ...

It was Bauhaus, Marcy.

I was just listening to Siouxsie on Tuesday night, and the Sugarcubes, "Life's too Good".

My 19 month-old ds is a big Pixies fan.

One song that I always heard at the clubs was by PIL, I think it was called "body"(?)-- I need to track that one down for nostalgia's sake-- they played it in the clubs here almost as often as "Halloween" or "Peek-a-Boo"...

Love this thread!

Peace,

I saw Love and Rockets in Cleveland, it was fantastic. My sig line in my senior yearbook was:
Are you confused by the chaos in everyone wandering eyes? Do you dream of running naked in warm rain?
yeah, the nuns loved that one :LOL

And Siouxsie in Pittburgh, julian Cope opened for her, and he was soooooo strung out, he was practically humping the mike stand :LOL

huge PIL fan as well, and the Femmes, Hoodoo Gurus, jazz Butcher, Bauhaus (I've got just about everything they did) New Order, and "Old Order" (mommy brain can't remember the name of the band that New Order was before the lead singer died: )

And of course, The Cure. Oh Simon, I do pine for thee

As well, Peter Murphy, you are a god :more drooling:

Loved Siouxsie!!!! PIL rocks, love John Lydon (Rotton). Joy Division is what you were looking for. So sad about the lead singer of that group. I heard he killed himself because he had a really bad case of epilepsy.

yes! Joy Division!

i can still listen to that and spin and spin and spin...

Oh, now I've got, "I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday" stuck in my head! What a great concept for a song, eh?

I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
