80's Progressive music - Page 4

Yeah, it was called Blind.

I saw Bikini Kill at a show and I didn't even know who they were - I actually went because Free Kitten was opening for them. Free Kitten sucked (that was a band that Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth - love old Sonic stuff - had so I had to go to see her) -and even though I didn't know BK before I went in- I was in love with Kathleen when I left - literally- big time crush. I ran out and got two Bikini Kill cd's and listened to them NON STOP. I still tell DH to "suck my left one". Hee.

Got into the whole Riot girl thing after my Smiths/Cure/ etc.. stuff. I remember doing a report in school- playing Bikini Kill and L7 and stuff and the class looking at me a little strange.

One of the BEST concerts we've been to in the near past has been the Bunnymen with Psychadelic Furs in Nov of 2001. AND to make it even better that year in July we saw the Bunnymen for *free* at a festival here in Detroit. It made up for my severe disappointment in leaving Dublin the morning of the Bunnymen show there in May.

The other day, Gavin giggled all of the way through Soft Cell's "Sex Dwarf". I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry.

Looking through our massive cd collection, the vast majority of it was 80's or early 90's - or artists who originated from the 80's and still released stuff later.

I don't like any of the "new school" "punk" but give me a good Social Distortion (amazing in concert) or Operation Ivy cd any day.

Ok Vein - WHERE WAS THE FESTIVAL!!!! I'm in Detroit and I don't remember it!!! I'm jelous now!

I havn't seen a concert in YEARS! (about 10 ). I really miss live music. However, I'm taking ds to see a band play on Monday and I'm actaully excited about it!

I don't like the new stuff either that some try to pass off as 'Punk'. I like the oldy's - I guess I'm old?

It was at the Comerica Tastefest! I about died when I saw that they were going to be there. I worshipped WDET more than I already did for bringing them there.

I think I'd curl up and die without decent concerts. Of course, our options are now really limited as to when the grandparents can babysit (and picking and choosing what we REALLY want to see - went to see Coldplay in March, but missed Erasure the day after).

I've got my whole concert list up at http://www.front242.net/vein/concerts.html .

(And now I'm bouncing to Big Country on VH1 Classic - who'd have ever thought what I listen to is now considered classic)

I've been thinking that myself lately!

You're so lucky to have a decent babysitter! When ds was born we had NOBODY for years that we could trust with him

Oh, I almost forgot (now how could I have done that) I did see the Goo Goo Dolls last year at the State! Ok, not very 80's, punk, Goth of me, but I just love them and I saw the Might Lemon Drops at one of the Heart Plaza festivals many years back.

Yes, WDET is to be worshiped! Echo is one of my favorite bouncing bands!

Vein, ds's guitar teacher is playing at Gameworks in Auburn Hills Monday night. His band Sponge had some big hits in the late 90's (Plowed, Molly 16 candles and Rotting Piñata), they're more Rock Alternative, but some of their music is really cool. We'll be there - ds is DYING to see him play live. I'll be the one in black with a funky 8 year old who knows ALL their songs and plays a mean air guitar :LOL

We're having company for dinner tonight, so off to clean the house. How about some Bauhaus this morning? A little 'She's In Parties' to dust with. Maybe some Siouxsie to vacuum and scrub to. Topped with a little Ministry for the REALLY dirty work! Then, I'll cook to Cocteau Twin and David Sylvian (gotta mellow out somehow).

Edited - I just noticed on your list that you saw Sponge last year. Did they play anything from the new EP? I have to say 'Leave this World' is an AMAZING song! Ds can play 'Treat me Wrong' and 'Dandelions Roar'

mmmm...David Sylvian...he looks just like an xbf of mine...do we have a drooling smilie yet?

Ohhh Mrs Mom I'd love to see Sponge again. Their mini show last year was REALLY good - they'd played a few songs off the new album but they didn't get as much time as I wanted them to since it was some WSU thing. I just wish Auburn Hills was closer and I'd be there in a heartbeat. We're right next to Grosse Pointe, so it would be at least an hours drive each way which my SO would not enjoy when he has to be at work early in the morning. *sob*

Martin on WDET rocks - Liz Copeland also often plays really good stuff, but since she's on between 12am and 5am, I rarely get to listen to her. (And we also always listen to Chuck Horn Fri nights from 10-12, which is more electronica, but he often plays good stuff as well)

mojomom: if you ever go to Car City Records in St Clair Shores on Harper, you'll find a ton of WDET stuff usually - at least 20 of our cds have "WDET" written on them. (One of the djs there either owns it or works there, not sure which)

AND, while I haven't listened to it in a long while, I think 96.3 is still doing Big Sonic Heaven every Sunday from 10pm-2am which used to be really good "rare" 80's - lots of Cure, Cocteau Twins, etc etc.

Vein thanks for the Car City reccomendation. Is it a used cd place or like Harmony House? Dh loves used cd places we go to Wazoo's in A2 all the time. I like good music stores where they really listen to music YKWIM.
Car City has mainly used stuff, but a bit of new as well.

The BEST place to buy used cds has to be Record Time. There are locations in Ferndale and Roseville and it's rare that I don't come away with a ton whenever I go in. (That is, when they have a good buyer in the goth/industrial section)

I've never been to Wazoo's - the last time we were in A2 was to see my orthopaedic surgeon so I was not in a shopping mood. Hopefully now that the weather is getting better we'll finally get down there one weekend.

If you want to whine you could also be from eastern NC! Nobody I know likedmy music before i had kids and I don't think it has gotten any better!
awww, common vein! You gotta come! We had some friends over tonight for dinner and they're going to come too. Ds's guitar teacher is going to think I'm a nut! I plan on packing the place. If you want a copy of the new EP, go to their wesite at www.spongetheband.com they have a list of local record stores that are carrying it.

I'm in Oak Park wich is right between GP and Auburn Hills. If either of you are ever up for a trip to the zoo, let me know! A bunch of us MI moms met in the fall and it was a riot!

Big Sonic Heaven is no more Darren was on leave for a few months and my friend Quigg took it over. Then Darren left and Tom took it over. A few weeks ago Tom quit and they decided to pull the plugg on it . Quigg does a show every wednesday at 5th Avenue in Royal Oak called Sugar Hiccup. It was a spin-off of Big Sonic Heaven. He also does one at the Commerica 5th Avenue (in Commerica Park in Detroit) every Friday called Sofa - same music! I've gone a few times and really enjoy it.

96.3 is going DOWN the tubes! I'm SO sick of rotation they play! 89X is pretty decent. But, nothing beats my own CD collection

Company is gone, it's quiet and I just found my Vicious Pink - "you're my fetish, you turn me on...." What can I say? good think the kiddies are in bed?
I think I need more sleep!

The Sponge concert at GameWorks is actully 6/12 NOT 5/12. So, all you Metro Detroit mamma's - wanta join me?

A friend of mine found some Joy Division vidio's and put them on CD for me. I'm going to put them on a webpage so everyone can listen. I'll post a link when I can, but today I exceeded the bandwidth - ahhh, free websites!

Yay! So there might be a chance I'll be able to go after all. Here I was getting all depressed that I missed it tonight because my SO had a bad day at work.

I had no idea that BSH was no more. The last time I listened to it was months and months ago. 96.3 has been unlistenable to me since they switched from 80's to whatever the hell they play now. I find myself only listening to cd's or 97.1 when I'm in the car.

Count me in as one of the Detroit people that would love a trip to the zoo. I've actually never been (always said I wanted to go, just never have gotten around to it) and it would be a blast to meet others to go there.

I have a lot of Big Sonic Heave shows on CD. When my friend was doing the show we recorded it. The music was WONDERFUL! I really miss the show. I fell asleep Sunday nights listening to it. Yup, they pretty much suck now!

T Go over to Finding Your Tribe and I'll start a thread on a zoo trip! I'm only a 1 1/2 miles away! It's a nice zoo! Us Michigan Mamma's are due for another trip!

What about Jane's Addiction?? And, my all time favorite...New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle!!! DH and I used to dance all night to it!
