Where do I start?

I'm hoping some of you more experienced mamas can help me out...DS is 8 weeks old, (breastfed only) and seems to have a sensitivity to cow's milk-he gets very gassy/fussy and strains to poop, and has green, mucousy diapers if I have any dairy. His eyes have had yellow goo since birth and my OB-who has since been fired-told me not to worry about it since his eyes weren't red. He also told me not to worry about trying to find the reactive food and that milk wouldn't cause colic. (Yeah. Yikes. That was when I decided to fire him.) But I don't think the eye goo is normal-if it was, it would have cleared by now.

DH is a very allergic person-hayfever and multiple food sensitivities, and I discovered after pulling dairy out of my diet for a couple weeks (on a hunch) that I am still pretty sensitive to it as well. (Which explains why I craved it sooo bad while I was preggo...darn it.) I also react severely to soy. (swollen throat, etc.)

Anyway. I'm looking for information on trying an elimination diet to figure out what else is bugging DS. What foods do you live on while you are getting the rest out of your system? For how long? I've checked out the above links, and haven't really found a good answer on what a person can eat...If anyone would be willing to help me out, I'd be extremely grateful!!

I asked this on another board last night since we just found my DS is allergic to dairy. Here's some stuff:

meatloaf-use rice milk if your recipe calls for milk, with smashed potatoes made with rice milk and smart balance light butter.

Hot dogs-ball park beef franks with Sara Lee wheat buns, french fries, Bush veg. baked beans

Roast and veggies

Pork tenderloin with marinade, BBQ sauce with potato salad and veggie

spagetti-there are some dairy free sauces, just read the labels
I make garlic toast with Sara Lee bread and thre are some dairy free frozen breads I have found at Wal-Mart, like Sister Schuberts yeast rolls

lots of chicken breasts, potato and veggies
I get on allrecipes.com and look for recipes that I think I can alter if needed.

Goolosh-
1 # hamb meat-browned and drained
add some garlic salt
1 lg. can of tomato juice
about 1.5 (dry) cups elbow noodles-cooked and drained
2 cans stewed tomatoes
sprinkle of sugar and S&P
Combine all ingredients and simmer. Turn off heat and let macaroni soak up the juice. You might need to add more tomato juice if its dry.
We eat it with Jiffy cornbread muffins made with rice milk

"Easy soup"-good soup, you can freeze half for later
2 #s hamburger meat-brown and drain
then add:
2 cans rotel
2 cans minestrone soup (read labels)
2 cans chili beans
1 lg can tomato juice, around 16 ounces
Heat it up, let simmer and enjoy. Your DH can put cheese on top.

Chicken salad-
boil some frozen chicken tenderloins until done, let cool, then cut in bite size pieces
Chopped purple grapes in half
1 red delicious apple
dash of salt
mayo
*Mix it all together, add stuff until it all looks even, cover and let chill for a few hours. Yummy on bread, with crackers and soup


This is what we had tonight:
Easy chicken noodle soup
1 tbs butter-smart balance light or olive oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped celery
4 cans chicken broth
1 can veg. broth
1/2 pound chopped cooked chicken
1.5 cups dry egg noodles
1 cup sliced carrots
1/2 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
S&P
melt butter, then saute onion and celery until tender. Our in broths and rest of ingredients. Bring to a boil, then cover and let simmer 20 minutes.

State fair corn dogs and fries

Even with the links and suggestions that I shared with you always, always, always check labels. Companies may change and not tell you.

Also, don't rely on the newer allergy information (where it list the allergenic foods it contains), not every label does that yet.

Laurel, My ds had the same issue. Remove dairy/casien/lactose from your diet for 2 weeks. On the 15th day eat a lot at breakfast and lunch and see how he and you react. Don't eat any for 4 days after that and you can monitor still.

I am dairy free and ds can have goat milk. You can do the same thing with the goats milk if you want after you do cow's. Ds does great on goat's but cow' he still gets a big rash across his face. If you get Eat Fat, Lose Fat there are a ton of recipies. I use coconut oil instead of butter and coconut milk in smoothies. It just takes some getting used to and now it is easy and yummy.

I would pull foods one at a tim and go from there. The top 3 are wheat/gluten, dairy, eggs. Others are soy and corn. Since you are sensitive to milk and soy You could start with those and see how you feel.

Where can you buy coconut oil and coconut milk? I've heard coconut milk makes great pudding!

Holy smokes that's a lot of info Caden's mom-thank you!
Newcastlemama-you pop up everywhere! How are ya? I stopped all dairy for 2 weeks and had some without thinking-duh. Still paying for that...my guts are tied up in knots and Cody's waking nearly every hour to cry and poo nasty green stuff.

But I'm thinking that there's something else getting the little guy because even w/o dairy and I don't eat soy on a bet-I don't eat much wheat, but I bet I do get it without thinking-out it goes.

Re: the coconut oil & milk-dunno how to make pudding, but I get coconut milk @ Safeway and spectrum brand coconut oil at Rosauers-it's way cheaper than the local co-op. You can order it online as well...

Looks like I need to go buy EFLF....Do you suppose Santa Claus will bring it?

I don't suppose you know how to make a dairy/soy free hot chocolate w/ coconut milk and carob powder, do you?

From a friend.

Dairy-free, Soy-free Hot Chocolate Mix

4 parts Powdered Rice Milk (such as Better Than Milk -- I got this at Akins)
1 part Cocoa
1 part Powdered Sugar

Sift rice milk powder, cocoa and powdered sugar. Mix well. Put into storage container.

For each serving, put 3 HEAPING tablespoons of cocoa mix in a mug. Heat 6-8 oz. of water to almost boiling. Pour about half of the hot water into the mug of cocoa mix and stir well until dissolved. Add remaining hot water and stir well. Serve with a spoon and stir frequently.

I used 2 cups rice milk powder, 1/2 cup cocoa, and 1/2 cup powdered sugar. I'm lazy and don't actually sift it. I just put it all in a sealed container and shake. There are a few lumps, but it still tastes good.

The Better than Milk Rice Milk Powder does have a lot of corn ingredients. I used the vanilla flavored first and it was good in the cocoa mix, but it gave it an almost coconutty flavor. I like the original flavor rice milk powder better.


Get a can of light coconut milk and mix w/ 1 small Jell-O brand instant vanilla pudding for pudding. We give it to Evan when he'll eat it b/c it's so high fat. I did the total elimination diet w/ him, turkey, carrots, rice, and pears is what I ate.
