Help me do CLOTH DIAPERS this time...

Hi mamas,
will just 10 weeks left I need to start getting some things ready. I would love to do cloth diapers with this baby from the very beginning. With Ashlynn I didnt start till about 6 months, when I learned all about them. So, I am really lost on what I need for a newborn. I know that newborns go thru a TON of diapers. I have tried prefolds before with Ashlynn and I was awful at pinning and folding and everything. I also tried those Fuzzi Bunz (great invention) but found that Ashlynn was very allergic to the microfleece inner lining. I think I want to play it safe and avoid microfleece for this baby too. So...can someone help me and tel me where to start...and what I need?
Thanks so much!!!
(I guess I could post this in diapers too, huh?)

Hi mama! We use prefolds exclusively and really love them...we do pins with covers. Pins and folding do take some time to get the hang of, but I know you could get it! If you really don't like that though, you can always just fold the prefold into thirds and lay it into a cover - super easy and really economical in those early days of flying through diapers.

Though we've never used the Snappis, I've heard of ppl having great success with those instead of pinning.

Our cloth stash for a newborn consists of 36 infant prefolds and 5 newborn diaper covers. We use the aplix covers - like Proraps - until the baby is chunky enough to fit into the Gerber vinyl pants. I know some don't like the pull-on pants, but they are workhorses and fit our budget better.

I guess I wasn't a ton of help...I'm really sorry. I know there are many CD-ing pros out there that will be able to give you more info. All the best, mama!

Maybe what you're interested in is fitted diapers with covers. Diaper plus cover, like the prefolds, only no pinnig and extra cuteness. My favorite newborn fitteds are kissaluvs, but imo, they have absolutely no value for an older baby. (well, at least for the heavy wetters I've known.) So possibly you want to invest in a fitted that takes you beyond the newborn period, lol. They'll have many suggestions over in diapering

I would do prefolds ( preemie or infant depending on how big the baby is) and bummis wraps/ pants and snappi's.. its cheap and in the mean time buy a sampling of things on the trading post. Get to know what you like and what works better before you shell out allot of money. Small babies grow fast and they wont be in anything for real long.

I've always gone with fitteds and wool. It can get expensive, but I'm so much happier with natural fibers on my baby's bum rather than PUL.
Hyena Cart has a vast selection of both that you'll drool over.

I'm cheap, so with a newborn I use PF's They just go through so many a day, and grow out of them so fast it just seemed like a huge waste of money to do anything else. But that is just me.

I have pins, and have never used Snappi's either, although I might buy some this time. I also use covers a lot and don't bother pinning at all.

But as you can tell I am cheap and lazy....

Ahh!! A woman after my own heart. I use prefolds too, always have, because I am cheap!! But I did learn to use pins, mainly because DS has no butt and they really need to be fastened on snugly.

I did, however, get some all in ones for the baby. A friend was selling them used for $2 apiece, so I snatched them up.

As for covers, I've got a mix - some PUL, one fleece cover, and I've got several wool covers that I knitted or crocheted - my mom made me a couple too.

We also did prefolds with covers for the newborn stage, also. Basically I would fold them in thirds right after they came out of the dryer, then just unfold the backs and flip it around to snappi it in place when I put the baby in them. Dh would just put the folded prefold into a cover and velcro it to the baby. I found prowraps were the best for holding newborn poops in, if you don't mind PUL. I had about 36 prefolds and 5 covers, but I got more covers this time around because I felt like I was washing them a LOT, so this time I think I have about 8 or 9.

YOu could also use fitteds, or I don't know what they're called . . . I think shaped diapers (???) that are shaped like fitteds, but don't have velcro or snaps, and then you just snappi them. My friend just gave me 2 doz of those, because she's clearing out her stash, so I'll see how those go. I think they migh be easier for dh and night time.

We bought a ton of CPF's when our local diaper service went out of business & then I bought some contours off the trading post here. I figure that the CPF's may be too big for our new baby (first DS was only 5-11 full term) so the contours are a big smaller. I have a bunch of covers since I figure I am lazy & won't wash every day

Another fitteds and wool mama here. Can you pick up some newborn diapers off of TP? I didn't start CDing my oldest full time until she was 6 weeks old but this time I have a lovely stash of fitteds, a friend lent me over 30 newborn diapers and a bunch of wool. I love the Muttaqins, Kissaluvs, and KindHearted Women best. I probably would have started in smalls otherwise (I'm anticipating another big baby). For covers I have a few PUL covers, a few fleece and several wool pants and soakers. I'm thinking that baby gowns with longies underneath is going to be the way to go for the first month.

If you're worried about sensitivities then organic cotton or organic velour is probably the safest way to go next to babies skin. I've found that mamas who can't use synthetics or hemp go this way. I usually have a hodgepode myself, since I like to try different things.

Good luck

i'm planning on cding this one from birth too. i've got a dozen pf, a couple of tiny muttaquins and a dozen kissaluvs coming. i think i'll need more pf -- i've also got a couple of wool covers and one pul cover. i have to find a link of how to fold the nappies because they look different from the ones that i used to put on my nieces and nephews 20 years ago (they're smaller and seem to have one section that's fatter that the others). and not using pins will be a pleasure -- i was so nervous about sticking my charges when i babysat.

for ds i started on fuzzi bunz when he was around 5 months old. we had an apartment and no dryer, so this seemed like the way to go. we switched to happy heinys after a few months because ds has some serious thighs and fb's don't really allow for that. we're still in cd part time because i got very lazy over the move.

does anyone have a recommendation to a folding pf site?

We use bumkins and prefolds and love them. DS was very slim, very chubby and now has slimmed down again and they still fit great and we rarely have leaks. He is also a very heavy wetter. I would suggest 24-36 newborn DSQ prefolds with about 5-6 covers. This will get expensive, but it will help you to keep your sanity. We had far less with our second and I am stocking up for this one!

mama to peanut 8 , little dude 22months: , and due 2/22/07!!!

Prefolds are already made with the extra layers of thickness in the middle, so not really all that much folding involved. Just how you're folding it to go on the baby. Here's a link - http://www.thediaperhyena.com/diaper_folding101.htm
