Back and forth between HS and PS?

Can anyone answer a quick question for my aunt?

My aunt is going to take her 3 DDs out if PS and HS them starting in the fall. One of her DDs is going into 5th grade and *might* decide after the year is up, she would rather go back to PS for 6th grade. My aunt wants to know, will DD be able to pop right back in to the 6th grade, or would she need to repeat the 5th grade in the PS?

I can't answer her question, cuz I don't know of anyone who actually sent their kids back to PS. But my best guess was they might give her DD a test to see where she placed first, or they would just put her right into the 6th grade.

We live in IL (a great state to HS in) and have a smaller schools, so I don't see this as being a big issue. But, understandably, my aunt wants to know for sure. My best idea so far is to call the school and just ask, but of course that is not always the best place to get HS info from!

Anyone know the answer or where I could find out for her?

Thank you!

I am interested in the answer to this question because dd and I are going to "try" hs out. We will then talk about it after doing it for a year and see if she wants to go back to ps. She is 12 now and in the 6th grade at ps.

Like the laws for homeschooling, the laws for entry (or re-entry)into school vary from state to state. In our state, they have to treat homeschoolers the same as any other student transferring into a school. (They can't, for instance, require testing of homeschoolers entering school if they don't require testing of all others who transfer into the school.)

You should contact your state homeschool organization, or read your state's laws regarding school entry/transfer. The requirements will be different in each state.

She should have no problem. If your aunt needs an idea of the letter to write to withdraw from ps, pm me and I'll send you a copy. Regardless of if the child will go onto go back into ps later she will want to also request a copy of the child's perm records to have on hand for legal reasons. Also when the child is withdrawn tell her NOT to register with the district as a hser. That is optional and if she does it, it just creates an atmosphere for other hsers withdrawing in that district like a legal precedent and the districts keep that list to check up on people IMO and if the child might back back into ps she will want to keep good records for her classroom teacher, even though IL does not require this. My older son has gone back and forth. If she goes back into the same elem school she withdrew from she will not be tested before the year, she will take the ITBS with her class if she goes back and the middle school will look at that score with her grades to place her in a track for 6th/7th.
Sixth grade is a general review of 4th and 5th grade so if she did not do anything all year in her hsing, the child would still be on track for ps in sixth grade and be able to learn all she needs to go onto seventh. Does her middle school start at sixth grade?

Sorry it took me so long, but thank you very much for your replies and the great info!

I did pass along the info to my aunt as soon as it was posted and she is very happy to know where to look.

Vanna's Mom, I told her she could contact you too. Thank you for all your help!

I would love it if it works out for her and her DDs. It would be great to have another HSer in the family.
