I would love some advice from people who have been in my shoes. My son who just turned 3 in August has taken to shrieking at the top of his lungs in numerous situations. It happens at home when he is impatient, but we are able to work on that and it seems to be getting better. But what is getting worse is the screaming in public. Example (but certainly not the 1st time), this afternoon he asked to stop by a train store (where he likes to play with their wooden train sets). The last time we went he had trouble leaving when it was time so we talked about how we would deal with that today. He asked how long we could stay, I told him 45 minutes and I told him that I would give him a 5 minute warning. I asked if he thought he could handle leaving quietly when asked and he agreed that he could. I also explained that after playing we would stop at the restaurant next door and pick up some dinner to take home. When the time came to leave I gave him his 5 minute and then 2 minute warnings, then said "Time to go." He started racing around in circles and then started screaming at the top of his lungs! I went over near him and got down at his level to talk calmly with him and remind him of our plan. He started shrieking more and took off running through the store. I calmly followed and finally got him out the door and to the restaurant. We picked up the food I had ordered but when it was time to leave he started shrieking again (and this is ear piercing screaming!) and then ran into the main restaurant area and insisted that we eat the food at the restaurant. I felt terrible for the people trying to enjoy a quiet meal. He was getting more and more irrational and if I tried to talk he would scream so I finally had to carry him out kicking and screaming to the car. This screaming when he doesn't get exactly what he wants is getting too intense for me. Anything else I can try to prevent it from starting or stop it after it starts?
