Your house is your home, your haven. For your kids its the base of all their memories. Do you really want them to remember their life looking like this? Do you want the home they create with their partners in life to resemble the state of yours right now? Get busy making that house a home, dear! Good luck.

May have helped mama2babybeans, but just made me feel worse. Last thing I want, coming here for support is more guilt.

The OP started the thread to "embarrass" herself and get her going on her decluttering mission. Its not about anyone else or their guilt.

Even if it was to embarrass herself, I think the posting of the photos itself was intended to cause the embarrassment--I don't think she was looking for a tongue-lashing for motivation. I was thinking about starting a thread here for those of us with messes that are beyond just simple clutter, who have psychological attachments to their things for various reasons, but the thought of others making comments like that made me think better of that idea.

I'm getting there! Maintaining the rooms is a challenge, but the less I own- the easier it's getting, and we;re still purging.

Hey, I wasn't trying to guilt anyone Gendenwitha. I simply grew up with messy, packratty folks. It was terrible to feel ashamed of my home and that I couldn't have anyone over because everyone's home was so much nicer than mine. I don't mean "nicer" in terms what we owned either.

For my own kids, I keep things neat and tidy. Not sparkly, not fancy and not "eat off the floor" clean, but nice. Able to invite anyone through the door at a moment's notice. Able to have playdates and friends over without any embarrassment or shame. It doesn't take all my time, the kids and dh help and we are happy.

I feel that this post was written in love and encouragement, not to make anyone feel badly. It's too bad Gendenwitha took it that way. Sometimes hearing things we don't want to hear is the only thing that can help us to make serious changes in our lives. I certainly needed to hear that, if not anyone else. Thank you philomom!

CDMAZE: just checked out your blog and your life looks fantastic! I so admire your aspirations for your family and life, as well as your goals of simplicity. You are an inspiration. Don't be too hard on yourself with your house....sounds like you're doing SO MUCH with the school, your dh being gone, kids, etc.!! I'm sure you feel so much better, having decluttered some, which will make all the other things you do so much easier!
