THAT was my first thought. I'd have definitely said to my child, "It's not a competition." I've been known to direct that phrase toward 6 year old ds fom time to time.

I talked to her a lot, at the time, about how I thought my child was the "est", and the other mamas thought their dc were the "est", and that is how it is supposed to be! Isn't it wonderful that all mamas think their dc is the "est" .
I guess, I just personally wouldn't ever tell my daughter she was the "est," prettiest, smartest, etc., as states of being. I might observe things that she did, what she was proud of, etc.

But I'm an Alfie Kohn junkie.

Yeah, I've read my Alfie Kohn
But, like I said, this was coming from dd--not from us. *She* wanted to know who was the "est". And the most honest answer I could give her was that every child is the "est" in their parents' eyes.

Ahhh. Gotcha.

I just find it sad that the lady's daughter even asked that question in the first place. Makes me think she is already overly conscious of her looks at a really young age.
