Toddler and baby on vacation

To Cancun, Mexico (yeah, the in-laws invited all their children and grandchildren to go instead of a 50th wedding aniversary party, great!!!). So, my DS 2 1/2 years already eats (of course), so what medicine would you take with you??? I know to be careful with the food. BUT my DD who will be 9 months is now weaning off the breast (I don't have that much although I drink like a camel that just crossed the desert) so I guess I need a bottle warmer, take bottles as well as soap? What if she eats solids (which most likely she will by then)? Maybe this is a stupid question: But they do sell baby food in Mexico, don't they? Anybody done this?

So, any ever travelled to Mexico with toddlers/infants? Your input is greatly appreciated...

9 months is WAY too soon to be weaning. You need to take steps to stop it. What you might be experiencing is a nursing strike. Babies around that age are prone to them. But do not wean that child. Sorry to go OT but its more important, IMO. About your vacation, yes you will need to be careful of the food and even more careful of the water- bottled water only. I normally NEVER endorse using processed baby food but in your case it might be safer than using fresh things down there. Oh and one more thing about the weaning- why on earth would you wean and give your child possibly tainted water and formula? Why take the risk? Even if you think your supply is low there are ways to boost it. You never know until you try! Your breastmilk is ALWAYS safe, keep that in mind as you make your travel plans

Thanks, but I really didn't/don't want to get into a discussion about my milk supply. FYI, I tried the tea, the more milk capsules as well as drops, I drink, I take blessed thistle and fenugreek. I nursed DS for 17 months but there just might be too much stress/whatnot in my life right now and I AM starving my child (I know because she chucks down the formula after nursing). I never had the fullness in the breasts that I had with DS, I even hardly ever leaked (which I constantly did with DS).

So, may we get back to the traveling plans?

I looked into going to Cancun with DD as well because I have family in Mexico that could meet me there. I decided not to go because it seemed like too much of a PITA and am glad I didn't because both my grandma and sister got a bad stomach bug. Here is some of my research though:

1. I would look into travel insurance or something that would fly you home should DD get sick. I have been to Mexico several times and never been sick but my Grandma who lives there half the year gets sick once a year or so.

2. I would call a travel nurse and ask about medicine. There might be one at CU.

3. Depending on the hotel they might have something to warm bottles. At least the ones in Cancun I looked at had something like that. I would take something to boil the water. The hotels claim to have something that will boil water but I wouldn't trust it or trust that it works when you get there. I bought my Grandma an electric teakettle that she can use. I would even boil the bottled water. I don't know if the sockets are different there, that should be something you can look up.

4. I learned this in Thailand but I think this might also apply here. ALWAYS check the seal on the bottled water you buy. Sometimes people will refill bottles with tapwater.

People do take their kids to Cancun, even their bottlefed babies. I would just be very careful and realize even if you are very careful you can still get sick. My Grandma has a good filtration system on all the water in her house and she still gets sick.

ETA: I don't mean to be all gloom and doom, I just like to prepare, YK? Have fun!

We just recently went to Cozumel with our dd, 20 months. She is still nursing, so that really helps, but we got bottled water and we were just fine. The problem with the fruits/veggies is that they are washed in the water, so like lettuce is not recommended for tourists. Does that make sense? I probably wouldn't worry about say, a sweet potato, if I was going to boil the water, wash the potato in the boiled water, and then cook the potato. It all depends on your personal comfort level though. We are pretty low key about that kind of stuff. You figure there are hundreds of thousands of people who visit there and who live there, and we only hear aobut the few that get ill. Call me crazy, but I just wouldn't worry about it so much. Buy bottled (sealed) water, and boil tap water. You guys should be fine. Have a great trip! I am a little jelous, I love Mexico!
