Car seat question

My 2 year old DS rides rearfacing in a Britax Wizard. He is 28 lbs and 39inches.

We have a Cosco Scenera for his spare seat. I realize it rear faces to 35 lbs, but his head is over the top of the shell so that doesn't work. And I put him in it forward facing today and noticed his shoulders were LEVEL with the top slots : Fricken' tall kid

So we'll pass the Scenera down as the baby's spare, meanwhile, I need to get a (cheap, please) harnessed booster to last him the next few years. I need something with HIGH top harness straps...this kid is TALL

He's not heavy though, so I anticipate he won't hit 40 before his fourth birthday, at which point I'll probably be comfortable making his 'spare' a BPB.

Recommendations?

There is a Safety first seat that harnesses to 65 pounds that I know nothing about but you need a certain kind of car with headrests apparently.

There is the Radian

My favorite is the Britax Regent. Yes it's 250 dollars but when you think that your 2 year old could easily get another 4-6 years out of it, the price is really affordable. Ds is 5.5 and still not in the top slot.

this has a lot of carseats measurements, including top slots. scroll down to combination seats.

i agree the regent might be a good choice. use it as a spare now, and when your son outgrows his wizard the regent can be the main seat.

Eeek, by 'cheap' I meant, "under 100 dollars"

I'm not spending 250 on a spare seat when I all ready spent 300 on his main one. LOL.

I'm checking out the link, thanks

Try the Evenflo Generations, it turns into a good booster when needed.

We have the Apex 65 for my almost 6 year old dd and she can still (barely) fit harnessed. Albee baby has it on sale for $99 and it will keep him harnessed until 65 pounds and the top harness slot is 17.5 I believe. Only thing higher is the Radian and Regent both expensive though.

they have the apex in red or blue and it can be used as a bpb later on.

Here's the link: http://www.specialtybaby.com/coalelapboca.html

We bought ours at babierus for 129 and I'm pretty sure walmart sells them if you are looking to buy it locally.

Are you in US or Canada?
The Evenflo Generations has top slots of 16.5" (I think) and harnesses to 40 lbs in the US and 47lbs in Canada. It is supposed to be a good booster seat. The one we got (to use in the US) goes to 100lbs as a booster. We got the cheaper version, and I like it much better than the more expensive version.

The Evenflo Chase has top slots of 16.7" I think, and harnesses to 40 in the US and 47 in Canada. It is supposed to make a decent booster. It is the cheapest/highest harness slot option, iirc. BUT it lacks a lot of options that I found were important. (We got it then returned it) It doesn't recline, so it sits straight up, and it has very little side protection.

The Graco CarGo has top slots of 17" harnesses to 40 lbs in the US, and 48lbs in Canada, and makes a so-so (some say bad) booster. But it is safe if you are diligent. You just have to make sure the belt doesn't get slack pulled into it. (If you go for a CarGo, don't get the cheapest version- the harness only adjusts from the back.)

The Apex has top slots of 17.5" and harnesses to 65 lbs in the US (not available in Canada, I don't think), and boosters to 100lbs, I believe. You have to have high seatbacks to use it, but most family sedans would, I imagine. I checked out my grandmas Impala, and ds (14" torso height) had a good 10 inches to go before his head was at the top. and the base of the Apex isn't that tall. The apex is the most expensive of the three, I think $130. But if you are in the US, it might be worth it to consider so ds can be harnessed for MUCH longer.

eta- just saw the pp- $99 is great for an apex!

I bought the evenflo generations for both my boys after the van was in an accident, so far, so good.
