hello,
i have been thinking about hs'ing for a while, but have never really looked into it seriously, other than talking a lot about the philosophical aspects of it with people. ds is going to be 3 in march, so i'm not in a huge rush, but when i looked up the homeschooling association of bc, and searched under vancouver, the only support group was christian, and we are not christian. i'll call the hsabc in the next weeks to see if they know more, but i thought i'd come here and ask as well, since y'all know so darned much. any hs'ers from vancouver or know about hs'ing in vancouver?
thanks!!

Hi there. I'm not sure exactly what sort of information you are looking for.

I'm from Kelowna. I can't comment on Vancouver, but we have a huge homeschool base here.

BC is one of the easiest places to hs. We have no required testing and there are many options as to where you could enroll (you get up to $1000 for curriculum and activities related to school) or you can register with any school that takes registrations and you receive $250. The difference is with enrolling, you work with a contact teacher. With the school we are enrolled with we have to send a weekly email to the teacher and submit a portfolio 3X a year. It sounds like a lot, but it really isn't much work at all. My son is in K and so far I have found our teachers really easy to work with and very flexible. If you register, you have no responsibility to report anything to the ministry of education. Which choice you choose depends on how you plan to "school" your children.

There are lots of coops and various activities. My suggestion would be to connect with a yahoo group in your area if there is one. Then you would receive emails of different events going on in your area. I think Vancouver would be a wonderful place to hs. There are so many things to see and do! Here's the link for the Vancouver yahoo group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HS-Van/

Good Luck to you!

I live in the interior, but I know many homeschoolers in the Lower Mainland. There's definitely a huge, vibrant [secular] homeschool community there, with the hs-Van e-list being the main networking tool.
