Peanut allergic DS

Hello!

I'm fairly new around here. The allergy forum is original what brought me to MDC and it's like a whole new world opened up to me.

My DS is 15 mo. He had a severe allergic reaction to peanuts a month or so ago. We didn't really know how bad it was until after the fact (neither DH or I have any allergies or know anyone with sever allergies). We're learning a lot and adjusting life, it's been difficult but we're adjusting.

My question I guess is from anyone with experience. DH and I are having trouble knowing where to draw the line. We don't have peanuts/tree nuts or anything manufactured in a factory with them in our home and we keep DS away from such. DH and I are trying to figure out when we're out on a date or away from DS should we stay away from them as well? Should we worry about bringing them home on our hands or breathe?? DS's reaction was so severe I worry that if I eat something and bring it home he would react--to think I would've knowingly ate something and brought it home and he reacted I would be..:

I would love thoughts of those who've dealt with this. Also if anyone has tips on eating out, safe restaurants etc. I'd appreciate it. Thank you!

If you're nursing you definitely shouldn't eat any nuts ever. If not, well, then I'm not sure. I know other parents will and are very careful to wash hands/brush teeth as soon as they get home. You have to decide whether it's worth the risk or not.

my DS just reacted to PB today and we are starting the whole process. but a few years ago I taught preschool and I had twin boys in my class. One brokeout in hives after eating PB&J, so the doc said he had an allergy, sent him for all teh tests, and gave the parents an epipen for "just in case"
Thank god - cuz they needed it. His twin brother ate a PB&J and then went over to kiss him on teh cheek. The oils from his brother's lips transferred in that kiss and sent the little boy into a severe anaphalatic shock. Mom quick gave him the epipen and called 911. It only took 5 minutes to get them there - but the docs told her that if she hadn't used the epipen he would have been dead before they got there. They had to give him another epipen in the ambulance.

based upon that - our school went nut free and we were requested not to eat anything PB before coming into work. it was asked of all the other students as well. And if this is a true peanut allergy that my DS has - I will be saying goodbye to peanut products forever. It is just too scary for me.
