Oops sorry, I shouldn't have assumed.

I just asked because I was going to suggest the English Smart series of workbooks, but the one I have is for Canada and I'm not sure if there's one with American spellings. Sorry I couldn't help!

For help explaining exotic spellings, a good dictionary is indispensable. One that gives word etymologies in particular.

Yup, dictionaries are good.

I see that your oldest was born in 2000. I don't have a separate spelling curriculum for my kids who are that age. My 6.5yo is using Explode the Code for phonics, and I feel that it gives a good enough grounding in spelling that an addional book isn't necessary.

Hey Alexa,

On our shelf are:

Words Can Tell (stories behind words)
The Story of English
American Heritage College Dictionary (unabridged is also loaded into computer)
Strunk & White
Line by Line (sentence structure and good witing)
Painless Spelling
Painless Grammar
Awesome, Hands-on Activities for Teaching Grammar

I often check out more word story bvooks from the library, Words Can Tell is not the best. When we study ancient cultures, I always try to bring in a linguistic connection somewhere.

On a daily basis, though, I don't correct a lot and they seem to correct themselves over time.

Lucie
