Anyone know how to get a baking business started?

I'm a mother of 6 and am currently working full time outside the home. I want to be able to suppliment my income and possibly be a WAHM in the future and have been thinking about getting into baked goods but have no idea where to start. I make awesome candies (brittles and fudge) and baked goods that family & friends go nuts over and would love to find a way of selling them but I don't even know where to get information on what kind of licensing or certification I would have to have. Does anyone here have any experience with this that can share some information and tips with me?

Locals codes will govern what you have to do/get. Our localities require business name liscensing, inspections of the area the food will be prepared, you'll need a food handler's permit....try calling your city or county offices to get the exact details.

Yep, check your local government website for the necessary licenses.

I am not doing enough business to require a business license in our state. If my annual income exceeds $5,000, then I have to get one. For now, I can just have fun and take it slow.

Plus, if your business is solely internet based, you don't need as many licenses.

Good luck!

Hi. My brother-in-law does baking out of his home. This is in Iowa and no special licenses are required. He has an internet presence, ships out shortbread cookies and cakes and bakes for local cafes. He used to be the chef/proprietor of his own restaurant so his name was already known. He approached new cafes that had not yet opened with samples. He also calls the local paper before the holidays and lets them know he's still in business. The dining issue has always been happy to include that info. in their early December articles on holiday food. Hope this helps. Best to you. richele

I was thinking of this a while back and was directed to some random place...the Dept. of Agriculture, I think it was (I was shuffled around to so many numbers I can't remember). But call them, and even if that's not it, they'll shuffle you to the right place.
