homeschool in LA??

We are in the in the process of investigating moving to LA. My kids go to a wonderful montessori school here in Indiana, where we live now. We love the school but when I look for montessori schools online in LA we can't find any that are in areas that we want to live, or that are remotely affordable.

Does anyone here know of any montessori/homeschool networks in LA?

TIA

I don't know of any, but I can't imagine they're not somewhere around, yk? It's looking like I'll be moving to the LA area as well sometime possibly in February, and I intend to homeschool - I understand the laws in CA are some of the easiest to deal with, so bonus there - so if nothing else, I'll let you know when I get there! Maybe we can start our own group!

Hi ando!!

I'm so excited that you may be looking into homeschooling. Looks like you'll be in good company in L.A. I ran a search on yahoogroups with the keywords homeschool Los Angeles and I found these:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WValleyHomeschoolers/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HomeschoolingInSCV/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SoCalAPFamilies/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SOCHS-INFO/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SCHSEnrichment/

Looks like you are in luck!

thanks lizzie - we will be there in Feb also looking at neighborhoods and schools, etc. and looking for homeschool networks. from what I understand, LA PS is super supportive of homeschool and will even provide you with textbooks if you want! (I think this speaks volumes to the overcrowding issues)...

hi jess!
I am perfectly willing to homeschool if I cannot find a school that I really love (I love my kid's school right now so much)... I think it is the best choice I'd love a montessori network, it works well for my kids. thanks for the links!

i'm in l.a. and just starting to learn about home schooling. my sons are three and a half and one and a half. i've gotten lots of great info from my east san fernando valley LLL group. there is a East san fernando valley homeschool yahoo group as weel. i wouldn't worry, with all the kids in entertainment homeschooling is not all that uncommon here. that's not why we're looking into it, but i have found that there is a whole network set up for homeschoolers. the hard part is finding groups that are conveniently located for you, not requiring hours of driving. i don't have lots of info, sorry, since i'm only just beginning my journey, but it does seem to be pretty doable here.

We are now unschoolers in Portland, Oregon but we used to live in LA, and my oldest child went to an amazing 50 + year old freeschool there, called Play Mountain Place http://playmountain.org/ which also inspired a public charter school called Pacifica Community Charter School http://www.pacificaschool.org/ Check them out!!

thanks momma of 3! I can't find any info on tuition or costs involved for the first link but that school looks wonderful. how is it different from montessori if you don't mind my asking, (that is what I am familiar with).

and that charter school - wow! so is it a horrendous lottery to attempt to get into that school?

thanks so much you guys this is helping a lot.
