New here, looking to become a writer one day

I just noticed this forum and thought I'd join. I've often dreamed of becoming a writer one day, but am not really sure how to start. My husband suggested I join the local writer's guild and then just carry a notebook around and start writing when I have a free moment (like when the kids are playing). I guess I'm wondering, if I need to finish my degree or get a writing job at a paper or something like that. I blog a bit. Does that count?

I just feel like I have so much to say and am not really sure where to begin. Any advice or ideas would appreciated!

Just write. Some people set up a time each day to sit at the notebook or keyboard...even if nothing comes, you are clearing the space for a new habit. Another thing I would do is to read a good, inspiring writing book like Writing Down The Bones by Natalie Goldberg (a classic) That book will give you many ideas to get you started.

Journaling also helps, it gets you in the habit of writing every day.

I agree, Writing Down the Bones is a classic and guaranteed to inspire. Take time each day, even a few minutes, to just write. Write about anything. I work for a paper and that helps exercise the brain. Journaling and blogging are also good helps. Have fun!

Write. Write EVERY day, even if just for 10 minutes. Enter contests, get books about writing and getting published from teh library.

In addition to Writing Down the Bones, I like Writing the Natural Way, by Rico and Pen on Fire. All will give you ideas. The Writing the Natural Way gives loads of concrete suggestions and would be the one I'd start with.

Believe in yourself. Come here often for critiques when you feel confident enough. Having someone else point out the good, the bad and the ugly really helps to define your work.

Good luck!
