one year old w/ dairy allergy?

I am a long-time lurker and mothering subscriber and first time poster.

I have a one-year old DD who, starting mid-November, has developed a rash across her whole tummy, from her chest to her abdomen. It is also on the back of her neck, spread to her sides (but not her back), and is starting in the creases of her arms. It is faint red, slightly scaly, patchy. We use organic Avalon baby lotion, which seems to help with the itch but not the rash. It is not in her diaper region or her legs. She is breast-fed and organic baby-food fed, with some table food (a bit of whatever we're eating). The rash did not start with the baby or table food, specifically. She has not started dairy, at least not drinks of cows milk or yogurt, though she does get breads or crackers that may contain dairy. Our family does not have any severe food allergies (DH's mom has a dairy sensitivity, but still has the occasional small bowl of ice cream with no trouble). My niece on DH's side was diagnosed with a dairy sensitivity at 4 mo, which was about 10 months ago. We hang out with them a lot, so I know the no-dairy diet!! DD2 is almost 5 yrs old, with no allergies of which we know.

DD continues to be a happy and healthy baby, with no emotional changes coinciding with the rash, despite itching her belly whenever she gets a diaper change. I use the same detergent I always have, and since I cloth diaper and she shows no diaper area problems, I assume it's not that. I have been avoiding dairy for a week now, but know that I'm not getting every last bit out, since I'm eating store bought bagels and the occasional christmas cookie (who's idea was it to start this diet now??!) She has not has any vaccines yet. I have not seen a doctor yet....

Sorry for such a long post - I'd really love to eat a piece of Christmas cheesecake tomorrow! Should I??!!

Thanks so much, fellow caring mamas!

Well, going at the dairy free diet part way will not give you any clear indication as to your DD's sensitivity. Dairy is a common culprit for eczema, and an allergy can dev'p at any time.

After I completely eliminated dairy from DS's diet I saw an improvement within 7 days.

What about eggs? Could that be something she is allergic to? Or soy?

I'll be able to do a real elimination diet after Christmas. (my parents weren't really prepared at their place for me to be doing dairy-free, hence the cheesecake!)

There's no family history of egg or soy allergies, but if I'm going to go df, that couldn't hurt either, I suppose. I didn't realize a reaction could develop so "late" for DD - I guess we start another new phase...!

There's no family history of dairy or egg allergy in anyone on either side of our family either.

DS has a very allergenic great uncle, but all of his allergies are completely different from DS's. And DS's great-grandmother (paternal) only shared one allergy with DS and that's strawberry.

Enjoy the cheesecake. I was crying in my heart yesterday when DH was eating biscuits and gravy at the restaurant. It's my favorite breakfast food.

Hi mombear! If I may ask, what part of Minnesota are you in? We're in North/Central MN, just north of Brainerd. :

We're in Anoka, in a 100-year-old home, determined to not be a suburb of Mpls! We've been here for 8 years. Nice to meet you!

After my day of cheese, milk, and cheesecake on the 25th, DD's rash looks terrible this morning, a lot more red than it has been. I officially join the ranks of the dairy-free! (at least until self-weaning...hopefully not too many more years!!)
