When do babies start to really wake up ?

Wyatt is just over 2 weeks old, and still seems to sleep 95% of the time - he barely wakes to nurse, doesn't really wake at diaper changes even, and heck - 1/2 way sleeps through a bath too !

Hmm. Mine were awake right from the beginning. Of course, they were also overdue. Was Wyatt early?

My first dd was awake from the beginning, too. I can hardly remember her sleeping at all. Now, my dd#2 is a sleepy baby, she is only 5 days old and she likes to sleep a lot. I think she has maybe 3 hours total awake time during a day, not more. At first I worried thinking she may not want to sleep at night to compensate for long naps during the day but still all she wants it to sleep during the night, too. I am also curious how other moms and babies are doing.

Whingari is 13 days old and still sleeps just like a newborn. She sleeps about 90-95% of the time, day and night, but she has more alert times through the day. They only last between about 10 and 30 minutes each, though. She also wakes, day and night, to lodge a complaint about diapers in need of changing. (She really HATES poops and demands they be removed immediately.) She wakes every few hours through the night to nurse as well, but always goes back to sleep without fuss or drama. She's producing TONS of wet dipes and about a poop a day, so I know she's getting the nutrition she needs. She's also getting loads heavier!

My first child was a high-needs-never-sleeps baby. My second was a 'more normal' sleeper and in all ways just more easy going. Whingari seems much more like DS#2. I remember DS#2 sleeping lots in the first couple of months as well.

One of my midwives observed that in her experience most newborns will have sleep patterns just like they did in the last few months of gestating. That's certainly been the case with all 3 of my wee ones thus far...

Mine is less sleepy than she was at the start, but there is a LOT of variation. Some days she is awake as much as 8 or 9 hours out of 24. She has at least one long stretch of wakefulness a day-- a period of 4 hours or so where she is just awake. Yesterday she woke from the night at around 8 AM stayed awake till 1:15 PM. Then she never woke for more than 15 minutes until 5:45 AM.

I can't predict her at all.

My ds seems so sleepy to me. I don't think dd slept as much as he does at one-month-old. He does have wakeful periods but nothing close to 8 or 9 hours in a day.

I really tried to pay attention to this when my last baby was born, and, while, of course, she had MANY wakeful periods, it wasn't until she was three months old that I felt like she was awake most of the day with naps periodically, rather than asleep most of the day w. periods of wakefulness thrown in there.

Hope that made sense! Congratulations!

Liam is 10 days old now and he sleeps most of the time. He has moments where he is very awake and alert, but he falls asleep again shortly afterward. I think some babies just like to sleep more than others.

cyrus is still sleeping a lot but his awake periods are getting longer and longer. He is a little over 3 wks

Cedric is two weeks old and usually has 1-2 good awake periods a day lasting 1-2 hours. He has very short awake periods the rest of the day, mostly waking to eat and then goes right back to sleep.

Linden is 12 days old, and he usually has about two or three wakeful periods a day that last from an hour to three or four hours. Today seems like a sleepy day though.

Natalia had been pretty sleepy - until we passed the 2 week mark. She is at 2 weeks 4 days now and just yesterday and today we've started to get awake/alert times where she doesn't need/want to be at the breast, but would rather look around, interact, etc.
