potato allergy in infant?

background - when I was pg with DD I became almost allergic to potatoes - my fav food prior to pg. I simply could not keep anything potato down all the way thru my pg. After PG I can now eat potatoes in small amounts and they tend to make me a bit green but not too badly.

I fanally connected yesterday what may be causing DD's on and off cough {she's had it since birth} and spit-up issues. It seems to flare up within hours of me eating potato in any form, and last for several days afterward. I still need to test it to make sure, but I'm fairly sure thats what is causing it.

It is possible to be allergic to potato? and potato passed thru breastmilk?

Its possible to be allergic to anything, though I don't think potato allergies are very common. Yes, anything you eat could be passed through bm. Since the potatos are bothering you too, see what happens when you don't eat them. You might try a food journal too just in case the cough/spit up issues are related to other foods.

Personally, I wouldn't test at this young of an age, particularly if you think its one very avoidable food. If she is still having problems at 6 months, when she starts solids, I would consider a test then (but that's just my opinion).

I guess I should clarify - I meant test the allergy by elimminating it from my diet for a month, then eating a small portion to see if it happens again.

I haven't given DD any solids yet and don't plan to until she is closer to 6 months. Her pedi won't allergy test her until she is at least 1 year old, so I'm on my own for trying to discover her allergies {so far for sure Oats, Nuts & possibly potato}

Hmm - what else is in the potato family? I do eat tomato products normally about once a week in spegghetti.

DD's pedi even says her reflux and cough is definately allergy related based on how it occurs, but she still refuses to allergy test her. :

when my first ds was a baby, his entire face would turn red when he anything "potato." no one, not even our doctor, believed he could be allergic to potatoes, but it wasn't a one-time thing, it was every time he ate them. i believe he was allergic to them, but he is now 3 and eating them again with no problems, so obviously outgrown!

My DS is allergic to potatoes. It was confirmed by a test. I never knew it was possible to be allergic to them either!

Not only is it possible to be allergic to potatoes, but this is one of the food allergies which can be a precursor to latex allergy. Doesn't happen with every person with this allergy, but the association is something to bear in mind.

Do a search on "latex allergy" and go to the medical sites. There's a very clear explanation by a Dr. Reddy in California.
