But it is really hard for her hands to knead the clay. Does anyone know a softer brand? So far we are usingthe clay from the Deluxe Pottery Wheel box from Toys R Us.:

The clay you get in those kits is HARD. To make it softer add more water to it. The best way to do that is put a wet washcloth in the bag with it for a day or two.

If you have never worked with clay before it can be a bit of a transition from playdough unfortunately it will never be as soft as that. You can get different clay that can cook in the oven from most craft stores, but I can't vouch for it's softness.

I learned to love working with clay when I was no older than 7. My mom signed me up for a pottery class at the local community college. I've taken ceramics classes on and off since then. It is a very fulfilling hobby. If she likes the kit, I highly suggest a class, working with kiln fired clay is different than the oven fired stuff and it comes out much less breakable.

OK UmmSamiyah now school me I did not even know that there was oven fired clay. We always used kiln fired and I just assumed that's all there was! I really wanted to make some bowls with dd.. can you tell me a little more? Can I just buy it at the local craft store? How does it work?
Thanks!
